What is the goo and mastic that I found when removing the windsheild?

Hello,

When removing the front and rear windsheild of my 1980 Targa, I noticed at least 3 types of "goo"...
My best guess is that all these have been there for 40 years. I have owned the car for 21 years to date and I know that these predate me!

The targa rear windshield had some grayish goo underneath the window seal... something that was reminiscent for me of the goo that was used in the past to attach window panes to window frames. Or maybe plumber putty in the US...

Both front and rear windshield had some "black" goo that looked like some of the plastic from the window seals had cooked and became gooy... no clue what that was.

It looked like the windows seals where glued in place using neoprene glue or something like this. I did not think that such glue was needed...

And finally, I also removed the front wheel wells...
These are screwed to the main body, but once again, it looks like there is some goo (some other grayish one), between the "wing" and the main body (anti vibration?) what is that, where do I find it, and do I need to replace it?

Any advice on what these things are/where, and which ones I have to replace, or not will be SUPER welcome!

Thanks,
Cyrille

Some previous owner had a leak, and "fixed" it with goo. I believe the proper installation is clean the paint, and new seal and no glue or goo.

Talk to a local Porsche specialist body shop. They will know a local window installer that knows how to do the windshield. I can tell you that ALL of them hate doing a Targa's rear window. It is a major challenge.

Hello,

Thanks for the info.
Unfortuntely, there is no local anything where I am at the country house :-(
I am working at the local auto mech who is helping me... but, although he often works on Lamborghini, he has never done a Targa... Plus the Lambo he works on are the the tractor type :-)

Any pointers on reinstalling the Targa windsheild will be SUPER wellcome. The tech articles do not seem to mention it...

Mikes Restoration on Youtube covers this quite well

the targa glass does have a couple of different types of goo from the factory. Check this thread out:

Thanks for all the good info.

Another question, How do you remove the top metal part of the Targa bar?
They are a number of visible screws from the outside once the seal is removed, but it seems that they are some other screws hidden somewhere else?

The targa bar cover has a dozen or so screws under the seal and then there are two speed nuts underneath that you access thru the rear wheel wells.

Hello,

I have another question. I am trying to put back the targa window seal...
However, the darn thing does not seem to hold in place. They seem to be 2 groves in the seal, an "outside" one and an "inner" one...

Which one should the window go in?

The picture shows that I am trying to get that darn seal to hold, but it definitely does not..
The 2nd picture is an attempt at showing the 2 groves in the seal...

Thanks,
Cyrille

Cyrille,

I don't see the metal trim strip installed in your window seal. There's a slot there for that.

You definitely want to take note of how much grey goo was in your window frames. I did not, and the bottom center of my targa window is much lower than it should be as a result. You can see my process, and my results, here:

Keep up the good work, and keep those questions coming!
