Oil Pressure gauge reading

'79 911, my oil pressure gauge doesn't go past 2.5. Needle fluctuates normally up to that number, then doesn't go any higher. Oil level good, temp doesn't alter it. I grounded the wire to the sender and the gauge needle pegged to 5, so it doesn't appear the garage needle is physically stuck or hitting an obstruction at 2.5. Bad sender??

Oil sending unit is cheap. I'd start there and see what happens. You can rent an oil pressure gauge from Autozone or Advance Auto.

Is this something new or something you've noticed over time?

If you're just now noticing, I'd start with the sending unit. You can also put a mechanical gauge inline to make sure oil pressure is okay. When I first installed my engine, I had what I thought was low oil pressure. I connected a mechanical gauge and found my pressure to be okay which led me to changing the sending unit.
