Nice colors on those 930s!
Boost control is also stand alone, same as ignition control. Both work excellent with CIS. Electronic Fuel Injection is just that, fuel injection. All sorts of things can piggyback on the EFI computer but each can also stand alone, same as EFI itself.

Fair point, yes, of course that's true. Adding electronic boost control and/or replacing CDI is far simpler than a full EFI conversion. I understand some folks have also removed the diverter valve and gone to a long neck intercooler along with replacement boost control, but I haven't studied that in detail.

Thanks -- are a couple of pics from the rear.

Thank you for the rear end pics.

That exhaust is really something "special"

It is certainly competitive with some of the exhaust tips I see on heavily modified Toyotas, Nissans, and Hondas in my area.

Luckily, it appears whoever installed it did not make any obvious modifications to the lower rear valance panel.

Yeah, no doubt. It needs to be toned down. I have a set of Quickjacks at another location but I can't get to them right now. I need to get under the car to pull the original A/C lines and otherwise check out all these... curiosities.

I guess the good news with 930 exhaust plumbing is it's all fairly accessible. But until I take a proper inventory of everything I don't want to run around buying parts, despite the many tempting offers that appear in the For Sale forum.

I’m no 930 expert but this is such a key suggestion. As long as there’s nothing of an existential threat going on (broken head studs, one or more cylinders running super lean, etc.) then just some vigorous exercise would likely yield improvement.

Sounds obvious, I realize.

Or you can go with a GT3-like exhaust setup out the middle..:D

OMG yes that is clearly the correct answer. 930 Dooley, think of the traction!

Joking aside, I mentioned before I need to crawl underneath and see what's what. The muffler is allegedly one of these:

http://www.montymufflers.com/index.html#M01

...and I can confirm that the tip isn't a separate attachment, it is all welded into the long feed tube.

But my question is whether the mounting flange for the muffler is likely to be a nominally standard location such that I could replace the muffler on its own and have it bolt on to the BB headers correctly? I don't know how diligently aftermarket exhaust vendors try to have standard spatial geometry for interface points.

There are definitely some Monty muffler fans around here. Unsure of the actual HP benefits. If you shortened it a bit and painted it black with some high heat paint I bet most of us wouldn't find it nearly as visually offensive.

Yeah, no argument from me, it is silly.

I just jumped out to the garage to measure the tip, it's 4" so either Monty used to do a 100mm tip (instead of the current 75mm) or this is modified or in fact isn't a Monty at all.

The tip itself flares out slightly from the feed pipe, I don't see a weld but more like what the muffler shops do to stretch out pipes slightly. It appears to be all stainless steel.

Yeah, wow 4" is ridiculously BIG. Probably messing with back pressure among other things. Scrap that last piece of advice. Instead....Kill it with FIRE!! :D

EDIT: Just measured mine. Looks to be about 2 3/4".

Some (perhaps many?) of you will be glad to see this:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627224879.jpg

That's right, it's the Monty exhaust, now separated from the car. After fighting with nut #4 for, oh, half an hour or so, and using a hammer.

As I mentioned earlier, I knew my 40 year old baby would continue to reveal surprises, and today was no exception.

First off, as a general word to the wise, don't work on these things if this is your available space. Don't be like me. Learn to plan things better.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627225297.jpg

Anyway first order of business was to remove the rear bumper, which revealed:

1) driver's side bellows only held on by one nut instead of two
2) removing license plate lighting harnesses required removing heat shield from the inside of the bumper, which was also missing 2 of 6 fasteners
3) once the bumper is removed, I then find myself going "Oh yeah, I have to put this somewhere." Which leads to...

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627225391.jpg

Sigh.

I knew I wasn't going to finish the re-install today because my replacement turbo/muffler gaskets haven't arrived yet. I also now understand why two are required and will quietly neglect to mention I only ordered one. Oh, wait.

Anyway test-fitting seemed like a good idea. I bought a used Mille Miglia 930 muffler from another Pelican. Unlike the (alleged) Monty, this one is far easier to handle because the final tip/outlet is a separate piece. Great, thinks I, this should slide right into position.

Except, er, no. It's close but I'm going to have to do some careful measuring and geometry because clearly the studs on the outlet side of my K27 are close but not quite. So I see reaming out at least one of the flange holes in my future.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1627225297.jpg

On the plus side, at least I can't get to my chest freezer right now.

Onwards!

Coastr 07-27-2021 03:40 AM

Now I want a 930. Or at least a turbo on my 911. All this talk of boost had me dreaming of hearing a turbo spool up and feeling the back shove…and I’ve never driven a turbo Porsche, just ‘lesser’ turbos.
