Starting a 993 engine on my test cart

Over the last 40 years I have started a lot of engines on my test cart but this is the first time I have ever started a 993 series engine. It is a bit more involved than 2.0-.3.3 carbureted and CIS and 3.2 DME starts. The engine had been sitting on the shelf pickled and wrapped for quite some time so I wanted to run it to keep everything operable.
Special thanks to Steve Timmons from Instant G and Terry (ZZ TOT) for their help.

Richard

pretty sweet richard. I aspire to one day be able to start a 993 engine on a stand. I am still in the 2.X to 3.0 phase :-)

Building a 993RS engine for a customer. Hope to have it on the test stand by the end of the week.

The hard part is not starting it on a stand, it is actually having one to start on a stand that is the hard part.
They are getting very scarce and very expensive. Still trying to make a decision if I am going to put it in a car or sell it.

Starting them on a cart or stand is such a huge advantage for checking and working out any potential bugs. Please post some pics of your setup when you get it done.

Old pic but here is what we use. Ben/MB911 made it for his engine and then sent it to me when he was finished. We’ve had at least 20 engines on it over the past year. We have dedicated harnesses, fuel pumps, etc. for each engine type. Carbs, cis, 3.2 motronic, 3.6, etc.

Nice setup, that is quite a bit more refined than mine.

If you are doing it often, it’s worth it. Great for fleshing out any small leaks before an engine gets sent out to a customer. We often install an engine in a car to run it in the road but first having in in a test stand allows easy access and a complete view of everything while it’s running. The trans is hollowed out but holds the starter.
