So, I'm wondering who did the Gulf colors of light blue and orange first? Ford or Porsche. Guess i need a quick history lesson.

That's the ford story, yet did Porsche do it first? Or when did Porsche first introduce the gulf colors?
According to this site porsche did it first in 1967? Anyone know for sure? http://https://www.gulfoilltd.com/timeline/sport/ |

I would have to say GULF did it first.

I thought John Wyer did the Gulf livery when he took over the GT-40 program after Ford had won LeMans. Deuce lost interest in the program once he tweaked Enzo's nose.

The 917K and 908/3 (1970 & '71) came after the GT40s (1966 - '69). Those were the famous Gulf-liveried cars. Were there other Gulf-liveried Porsches and Fords from/before that era?

John Wyer had done some development work for Ford on the early GT-40 program. His racing teams had entered cars at LeMans since the late 1950's. After Ford won the race in '66 & '67 (I believe), Wyer was a natural to continue to campaign the cars under his banner. The cars were rebadged a Mirage's and small refinements continued. He was instrumental in bringing Gulf to the front of the pack and several of the Fords were were campaigned in the powder blue / orange Gulf colors. Gulf continued to sponsor Porsche in '70 & '71 and beyond. Can't remember if a Gulf sponsored Porsche ever won the 24 hour.
So, what pissed off the FIA more, Americans with their NASCAR motors or the Germans? |
