Fan Belt Squeal
Greetings,
My fan belt seems to squeal when the car is fully warmed up (usually starts after about 25 minutes of driving). Squeals during shifting. I sprayed some belt dressing on it and that seems to help a bit, but now I am noticing the same sound (just lower) when driving (after totally warmed up) and temp seems to be running slightly hotter than usual. Belt is 3 years old and about 5000 miles. Also, I notice that deflection is now about 3/4 inch (used to be probably a little over 1/4 inch which always seemed tight to me). I assume it is better just to replace the belt than to tighten up by 1 shim. Any advice would be appreciated. |

If you are removing the mounting bolt and assembly to rearrange the shims, you might as well just replace the belt and keep the old one with you for emergencies. Sounds like it was loose. I would not use belt dressing.

Thanks, it was a pain to get to the back bolt on the air compressor so I could get the accessory belt off to get to the fan belt.
Off course, I dropped the washer and a shim when disassembling (retrieved the shim, but the washer seems to have disappeared). Will look for it in the morning when lighting is better... Question, if I never use the air conditioning (lousy, plus this is a cab), can I just leave the belt off? |

David I've heard it's important to have a Porsche brand fan belt. Can't remember the details... Maybe something about the angle to fit the pully groove.

My AC doesn’t work so I just left the belt off. No problems.

These belts can stretch very quickly. Seems unpredictable. Dealer belt. Replace the belt.

As far as the AC, if you are not going to use it anymore, you don’t need to put the belt. If your AC is functional, then you should put the belt because it is good to occasionally turn it on to circulate the oil around.

All good now. Washer was found and fished out by my daughter. Had to go 3 and 3 on the spacers to get a decent tension.
Will take my daughter out for an extended test drive now and if all is well reconnect ac belt. Thanks everyone for the help. These cars definitely are different, but satisfying at the same time. |
