When street racing goes bad...

The race:

http://www.illz.net/E46_M3_VS_Eclipse_GSX.wmv

Aftermath:

sys12.cs.jmu.edu/hawleycj/vids/aftermath-low.WMV

Of course, a flat six would never do something like this! (Note reference to 911 for confirmed Porsche content.)

Video is downloading right now, so I haven't seen it. Long pinky nails are often seen on cokeheads (only seen the pinkies- never seen it or done it).

Long pinkynail. First I didn't get it. Now I watched the video again. Yuck! Excuse me while I go vomit. You mean men walk around like this with very long fingernails? Disgusting.

Oh and M3's suck, but they don't break down LOL.

Before watching the video, I thought it might be another video of an M3 engine exploding. Guess not. I would have loved to have seen a shot of the car from the rear as the engine was exploding.

Looks like the guys are either going buy less Coke for themselves or sell a lot more.

Ouch! Just watched the second video and now I almost feel sorry for them. Imagine your 911 engine do that How can an engine just fall apart like that?

did you notice the turbo? I suspect they cranked up the boost without thinking about any of the internal mods needed to boost the engine any more

Tim,

You are probably right. I am not sure if the M3 was racing, but they beat it off the line pretty badly. I don't think a stock Eclipse could manage that with some serious over boost.

Yeah, turned up the boost and walked the crank (problem that DSMs are notorious for). The kid's a complete idiot though, notice how he hangs on the rev limiter constantly trying to "rev up" the M3 at the light. Moron.

Depends on the Eclipse, but a GSX would launch really hard due to the AWD system and then start to lose its momentum at the top end b/c of the parasitic drag the AWD causes. The GST wouldn't launch as hard, but also doesn't suffer from the drag the AWD does at the top end. Most of the fastest DSMs in the country (Brent Rau, Buschur Racing) are running on the AWD system with beefed up differentials and axle shafts, these cars are in the low 10s / high 9s on DOT approved tires.

Those aftermath images look all to familiar to me. About 12 years ago I had a 944 that sucked up some water through the ridiulously low air intake. It went through the airbox all the way to the combustion chamber and.... well let's just say, water definately doesn't compress. Even with steel.

Broke a rod and sent it through the engine block at low rpm. Not a pleasant sound.

The funny thing is, the engine still ran on 3 cyls - I knew there was a problem when I opened the hood and saw oil shooting out a hole in the side of the engine.

Fortunately, my insurance covered install of a short block as it was damaged by water over the road.

Sold the car to a friend (with full disclosure) it now has 150k miles on it with no problems!

Zamirz, you are pretty fast calling people idiots. That thing you heard could also be anti-lag. When you have Eclipse that beats M3 off the line then you probably have custom ECU, and almost all have anti-lag built-in. It spins up your turbo so you have full boost instantly.

I think guys are OK. They boosted pretty hard but engine didn't knock to death but conrods (or crank) failed. Next time they should try using custom (Carillo?) rods and it won't happend.

Pretty small turbo tough, makes me wonder how our engine will run, GT40 is double size of that thing

There is an Eclipse in our SCCA region that uses that type of device on the line for the start of an AutoX. It is wicked fast off the line.

We used a similar device back when we were drag racing called a two step. You would hold the button and floor it and the two step would limit the motor at the specified RPM and then when you released the button it would launch you like a rocket ship.

I had mine set a 4700 RPM and when I left the line I could carry the front tires for 40 ft!!!!! It was amazing.
