I’m not saying it’s terrible but this is kind of different than normal backdated where it’s mostly a matter of swapping out body panels.

To spend the time and money to sculpt and craft a new body and make it a mimic of an early car as opposed to designing something new is kind of odd.

I think it would have been much more interesting and successful had they done something new.

But to each their own and for sure it’s better than what rolled out of Stuttgart in the late 90s… barf!

Kudos for the craftsmanship and final product.
Is this not another example of originality and significant skills in the continuum of "911" modifications, from the replacement of a bumper to the TheonSingerGunther designs/hotrods? Porsche can be the medium for expressions of creativity and skills. Both of which are analog and infinitely varied.
Said the guy tangentially referencing fact he can't hang a bumper straight.

Craftsmanship? We have really lowered the bar. Significant skills? Is bolting body panels on a car a build? Or a modification? Making panels from sheets of aluminum is craftsmanship and skill.

Possibly, significant may be the wrong adjective. But for the enthusiast who did the work there was skill. It’s a big tent, room for all. Body panels to aforementioned elite builders. Final product looks dope.
… body panel bolt on? RWB much.

Dope? Meaning "excellent"?

First of all, read the room. Using the word "dope" here is like playing rap music at a Vatican party.

The final product looks terrible. Kind of like Mr. Potato Head parts stuck on a watermelon.

My thinking:

- The workmanship looks pretty good. I've seen customs that looks a lot worse.

- The car looks like a custom 911 as re-imagined by Dave Kindig (Kindig-It Design, of Motortrend TV "B*tchin' Rides"). That shop did, after all, do an "updated" 300SL Gullwing replica.

- The front end (debatably) looks better than a stock 996, but them almost anything that takes the Boxster headlights off of that 911 is an improvement, IMHO.

Interesting point, but there have been any number of recent retro-inspired designs. Examples include the 1996 Jag XK8 (an unabashed homage to the E-type), the 2005 Ford Mustang, the 1997 New Beetle, the 2002 Ford Thunderbird.... Many of these were quite successful, some were not (e.g. the afore-mentioned T-bird).

Even Porsche does not hesitate to use notable styling cues from early models; note the "Fuchs-inspired" wheels and the side stripe on the 50th anniversary 911 below.

Perhaps the body kit shown above takes it a step farther and more into the retro-Jag, New Beetle, & retro-Mustang arena.
