Server Prolblems?
Sometimes, when hitting reply or submit reply, I get this goofy message that says "Server cannot be found." It almost only happens on this computer (my home computer), but this weekend, I saw it happen once or twice on my laptop. Hitting back and resubmitting a few seconds later works almost all the time.
Anyone else have this problem? I thought it was related to my new computer (and firewall/VPN, and all the other crap that protects my home computer), but when I saw it on my laptop, it made me wonder... ??? -Wayne P.S. Seems to happen most of the time late at night when there aren't too many people on the BBS? |
Oh, and occassionally, the little buttons "profile, pm, etc..." one of them doesn't show up right.
When I hit the submit button, the "Server not found" message is nearly instantaneous - no delay, so it's not like it's looking for it. I suspect it's my computer, but I want to make sure... -Wayne |
I have seen it a couple times at home...and quite often at work.
Nothing major though...think it's just due to traffic at the time. |
I think it's you Wayne. I've never experienced that problem on any of my PCs and I'm on the board a hell of a lot.
However, I do often experience delays or timeouts when some of the board graphics are downloading. That usually goes away when I get to the next thread. |
I think it might be related to something doing with Internet Explorer version six. Also might be related to the text compression used on the site. The text compression really, really, really incredibly speeds things up, so I'm loathe to remove it...

It can't be related to server load, because it only shows up when sumitting a reply, not when viewing pages. If it was related to server load, it would show up on showing pages as well...

Wayne, I have experienced the same sort of problems, not frequently, hit reply and the screen freezes, or "sever not....
I just chalked it up to traffic. PS i have IE6 with the latest service packs |
Wayne,
Response time is good, and consistent. Since teh last server upgrade, I ocassionally get a partial page served, terminated by an error message. Refresh gets the full page every time. If you want, I'll collect the error detail for you [in case you need something extra to chase!!]. You are doing god's work, man. Many thanx! |
Wayne,
I am not seeing anything like you describe from here. I am using IE6 with all updates, on Win XP Home with all updates.. Don't know if that helps, but you got it. Great board! as ALWAYS.. |
I think it's related to IE6...
-Wayne |
I'm exclusively on 5.5, and I've never seen the problem described.
|
No problems here, using IE 6 and WinXP.
|
Never had any problems like you describe...I use Linux and Mozilla.

XP Pro and IE 6 on two different machines, both behind firewalls. No problems here.
Is there any scheduled maintenance running on the box when the problem occurs? If db backups, cleanup, etc are running the box might be taxed even though the site traffic is low. When all else fails dump cache and reboot. Good luck. |
I get it on occation on both my work machine (XP and IE 6) and at home (linux and opera 6.03)
|
Never a problem here, 3 pc's running xp pro, ie6, (all updates) one laptop running win 98......never seen it.

I could get our IT guys to write an extended explanation, but the short story is Internet conectivity issues. Unless you can trace specific server overload problems, it's got to be connectivity. Likely your ISP, but could be at another point on the local super highway as well.
I had similar problems at home when I was using dsl from the local phone company (awful), since switching to cable modem, no problems. We deal with similar service issues at work, with customers from around the country and connectivity is usually the issue. |
MarkP: I would like respectfully disagree. I am an "IT guy" that manages a large Internet website and it could be a number of things besides connectivity.
As mentioned it could be a server issue, other likely issues could be a bug in the code that runs the Submit Reply, browser compatibility issues, actually the list goes on and on. I think troubleshooting computer issues is kind of like troubleshooting car issues. It's a process of elimination. This is my first post. Great site Wayne! Oddly enough I thought my first post would be about 911's, not computers! _____________ -Ryan |
Site's fine, technology is not perfect. Don't worry about it.
BTW, no issue on OSX w/Safari browser or XP w/IE 5.5. Scott |
There's almost no way it can be connectivity problems, because it only seems to occur on a posting submit. If it was connectivity, it would show up on page loads as well.
I have heard that there are some similar issues with the newest version of IE 6. Both machines that I have seen the problem on are running IE 6... -Wayne |
