Recommendation: Paint Work Near Monterey CA

Hello Pelicans!

Some of you may recognize my username by now, I have bought and sold a lot of parts since purchasing my 1970 911T.

I have since had thousands of dollars of body work done to the car and had it repainted.

I got the car back in May from a guy who I was referred to by many pelicans and friends I met along the way, he is from Scotts Valley.

It's a long story so I'll spare the fine details but in the very end of the project I was let down by the bodyman who was supposed to paint my car but essentially he did most of the bodywork then lied to me and had someone else paint the car. The car had hundreds of tiny fibers in the paint from a dirty booth and was not properly cured even though I was told it would be. I was told the first spray was so bad they had to shoot the car a second time and it still isn't clean.

The car looks nice from 5 feet away, look a little closer and you see runs on the window frame, the inside of the hood, orange peel on the more tough areas to paint and worst of all, entire sections of the car under the fenders are bare metal / primer. Needless to say I was let down and even writing this post is hard for me and it's been a major learning experience and it's taken a lot of courage for me to sit down and admit I screwed up by going with this guy.

I paid over twice the estimate (my mistake) and ended up with a less than average paint job.

The intention of this post is not to garner pity or place blame or shame the painter / bodyman. I am simply looking to move my project forward so I can get to the fun part of installing all the great parts I have purchased and horse traded with all of you.

Before anyone says "use google, it's you friend". I have called a majority of the local shops in Monterey and they're all booked up for 12-18 months working on complete restorations.

I would like to flatbed the car to begin repairing the damages soon etc. I wanted to start earlier but Monterey Car week puts a strain on all the shops here.

If anyone has any recommendations for please post them. Thanks in advance.

Here’s a few thoughts,

1) Maybe contact Adam Mohr at Mohrs Imports in Monterey and see who they’d recommend.

If you’re not opposed to transporting the car north there’s 2 amazing guys up in OR, 1) Freddy at Vintage Sportscar Restorations in Phoenix, OR or Scott Longballa in Corvallis, OR.

You might be disappointed in wait times. Seems like all the good shops have long lead times.

Revival Road is in Monterey. Have seen some of the cars they've worked on, all looked very nice.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience.
Good luck, the good news is that it's all fixable.
Bill

sorry to hear about the issues. a few ideas based on people/shops I've seen suggested before in the wider area:

- Marc Zurlinden (Monterey)
- Vintage Auto Body (San Luis Obispo)
- Spectacular Auto Works (Oakland)

good luck!

Awbar - I am so sorry to read about your experience. All I can say is stay the course and persevere. I had a similar experience with my car and was ripped off by a shop in Charles City, VA on my '71 914-6. Yes, I shipped my car from CA to VA for this thief/fraud/liar to do the work. He lied and stole my money and parts. I picked up my car and what parts he did not steal and brought it back to CA, Torrance, CA to Auto Art Customs and Kent Simmons along with Jim Geer, Andy Thonet and Bob Fulton turned it into a 1st place PCA Werks Reunion class winner.
