Shop recommendation in DC Metro

Hi gang - looking for a reputable Porsche shop recommendation to work on my 964. I live in Maryland, 10 miles outside DC, would prefer a local shop but willing to travel a reasonable distance including Northern Va.

Appreciate it.

I have heard good things about Innersport, but have never gone.

Thanks, I have heard mixed reviews about them. Anyone have first hand experience?

Taylor Chapman is absolutely fantastic on all of them, but especially on the older cars.

Thank you all for responding.

I also heard good things about ASG and RPM, wondering if anyone has had experience with either.

Intersport - highly qualified. Not cheap (what is for our cars?).

Matt DeMaria at Stuttgart Performance Engineering - working on 911s and 356s since the 1970s. He’s in Gaithersburg near the air park. Highly recommend.

Not to hijack, but is RPM still in business? I used them until we left in 2003 to return to San Diego. They were great guys.

I think Matt may have retired.
Can recommend Taylor Chapman.

I recommend you get a login on the DC area Dorkiphus site - it is the local DIY/Porsche fanatic club and they will have lots of recommendations and it is a great network to be a part of:

Matt is very good, has not retired, and is part of Tag-Motorwerks with Ham in Gaithersburg.

Lots for very well respected shops in the Wash DC area, fewer choices on the Maryland side.

RPM is absolutely still open and does all the work on my '84 911. Great guys, great shop. Can't recommend them enough.

Thank you all for your input. Based on the info. gathered, and talking to some of my local enthusiast, I made an appt. w/RPM for Friday despite some of the MD outfits being closer to me. Matt D. is renting a small corner from TAG, his operation has been considerably scaled down.

Appreciate it again.

I had several years of very good experience with Jose at Autobahn in Fairfax, VA. Some of the shops in the area came very highly recommended, but also had a very long waiting list (and they all seemed to really book up around race season). Autobahn was able to take my car right away (and as a bonus, they were very close to where I lived at the time). Autobahn Service, Inc., Porsche® Specialist in Fairfax, Virginia

As an update and to inform the community, I just returned from RPM. I can't say enough about Kevin. Man, what a nice guy and so knowledgeable about my 964. He took his time to go over the entire car with me, and explain the proper maintenance and care. I was in and out of his shop under 2 hours. I'm a customer for life.

As for my journey, I posted here b/c I had a terrible experience with one of the aforementioned outfits in Maryland. The fellow had supposedly served as expert witness on 911's and air cooled Porsche's in general. Well, not so much on my car, total miss-information. I just couldn't believe what I was hearing which is why I looked for a second opinion.

Thanks again, can't say enough about RPM.

While some here recommend Chapman, I will say from my experience it depends on who works on your car there. Taylor was busy and I needed work done within a month, so I was handed to Andrew. But Andrew didn't have much experience with air-cooled from what I have gathered after the fact. I spent over $4k in parts and labor because I needed to drive the car across the country to where I lived. What should have been fairly straight-forward things weren't done properly. The valve adjustments were not correct, adjusted too tight and discovered during the next adjustment couldn't even get the feeler gauge in 3 of them. Even the v-belt was too loose, tire mounting seal leaked on the drive out, oil pressure sender was replaced but didn't solve the issue (Taylor agreed to refund), clutch adjustment wasn't proper, the cable needed to be realigned. Other things that were done seem to be okay and have not needed correction at this point.

My correspondence and interaction with Taylor was professional. Knowing what I know now, I'd have Taylor do the work so you have a straight line to responsibility. If he wasn't available, I'd try another shop.

For what its worth, I no longer see Andrew listed on Chapman's staff page so I don't know if he is still there or not.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Patrick. I also heard similar first hand stories about Chapman which is why I stayed away. Honestly, there is a handful of good outfits around the area, unfortunately none near where I live in MD. The trip to RPM for me was well worth the drive.
