Non-matching engine in the '74 Carrera
Hi folks - on the 1974 Carrera Targa the engine number in the car is *6342026*.
Going off an engine number post from Grady from years ago that suggests this current engine may not be what she was born with? OR - since the engines for 1974 weren't really different between "regular" and Carrera cars in the USA - is that inconclusive? Know ultimately I need to order a COA but if I can determine is wrong for sure that seems tom be worth knowing. I bought this to use and enjoy, so not super hung up about it. Thanks! --------- 6 = Engine design, 6-cylinder engine X = numbers 1-7 (see list below) 5 = Model year 1975 xxxx = Sequential serial number usually starting with 0001. Exceptions: Starting with 9001 = engine for Sportomatic. X = 1, 911, Type 911/41, (or Type 911/46 for Sportomatic) X = 3, 911S, Type 911/42, (or Type 911/47 for Sportomatic) X = 4, 911S/Carrera USA, Type 911/43, (or Type 911/48 for Sportomatic) X = 5, 911S/Carrera California, Type 911/44, (or Type 911/49 for Sportomatic) X = 6, Carrera 2.7 (MFI), Type 911/83 X = 7, Turbo 3.0, Type 930/50 |
More important would be the internal spec number. IE 911/8x on the flat to right of fan.

Should start 644 for 1974 US Carrera.

Thanks Bruce, will check that.
Matt - that is what my decoding suggested as well. It is interesting that even though I belive the engines were mechanically identical they gave the US Carrera a different engine number. Any ideas why? Appreciate the responses. |
HUH?
for 1974 the 911S and Carrera had the same engines in North America: 911/93 from 6340001 Manual 911/98 from 6349001 Sportomatic |
My understanding is that the Carrera's used for the same engines but the information from Grady indicates that the Carrera models got a different engine code, not sure why since they were the same.

Good morning, what I found over my morning coffee is interesting. Did some digging this morning via auctions and what I found seems to suggest that there were at least some real 1974, COA confirmed, that had 634xxxx engine numbers. Actually every single 1974 I found on BAT with a matching COA was a 634xxxx.

1975 cars seem to be 645xxxx

My apologies for adding to your confusion. Dave is right, as usual. I took the decoder you used, and just used it. However, that's for 1975 only. It's not the same decoder for 1974.
1974 only had 2 US specs with digit 2 being a 1 for a 911 normal and a 3 for an S or Carrera. |
Thanks for the follow up, and looks like I did (as I initially thought) buy a correct range engine number. Phew.

The North American Carrera in 1974 could not get the MFI engine of the Euro Carrera's and so had to settle for a plain 911S engine. The North America spec for engines changed to CIS on Jan 1, 1973

So it is a 911/42 then? You keeping us in suspense? SmileWavy

Will pull that number and report back, really needed get a path for the engine coming out. If it wasn't number matching then I was going to be rebuilt and go into a 914. Thanks for the response! |
