"Life" of coll. spare tire while stored?

Being that the spare tire spends 99.99% of it's life uninflated, I was wondering if they have a certain "shelf" life.

While using mine not too long ago, I got nervous when I thought about the seems where it folds getting weak from age.

Thanks,

From my 911 Owner's Manual, page 72, "The supposition that tire durability and performance are imune to the effects of storage and age are unfounded. Chemical additives, which make the rubber elastic, lose their effectiveness in the course of time and the rubber becomes brittle and cracks. Therefore, the tires, especially the collapsible spare tire, should from time to time undergo a visual check, To accomplish this, pump up the collapsible spare tire.
Under no circumstances should tires older than six years be used on your Porsche. The age of the tire can be obtained from the "DOT" code number. If for example, the last three numbers read 125, then the tire was produced in the 12th week of 1985.

Does that mean I need to replace my 25 year old spare?

I took mine out just yesterday and pumped it up, probably for the first time in its 20-year life. Tire looked fine...but the valve stem leaks at its base badly enough that unless I can somehow figure out a fix, the spare is essentially useless.

My son had to use his temp spare the other day. Hit a road hazard and split a brand new T/A on the 944. It worked ok. I wouldn't recommend any more than getting to the tire shop on it though.
