Smog

I got my car (84 Carrera) smogged today, passed easily. In conversation with the tech(shop owner) he relayed the intent of the government. They would like to get every pre 95 car off the road. Hence the no traction on 25 year rolling exemption.
The problem comes from the costs to maintain the 76-95 smog equipment. He isn’t sure how much longer he will keep the smog equipment for the older cars, he said the state keeps making it harder to comply with the Regs.
If you think about it, it’s genius, just make it a little bit harder for the techs, and when you can’t get your car smogged, poof, it either stays in the garage or you sell it, either way the intent is fulfilled.

The biggest issue is that most smog control devices in the late 70s and early 80s were one offs. NLA and the asswipes at CA BAR, insisted on OEM control equipment.

There was an out. Upgrade the motor with current smog or wait for the rolling 30 year exemption. AHnold signed a bill repealing. This from a guy that had an #1 Hummer that was registered in Oregon.

I think eventually they will give up. Just like they did on the pre '75 cars.
I thought it was only California that was doing that, but I guess not.
FWIW, I just moved to a county in CA that does NOT require bi yearly checks. CA what a place.
I also find it really counter-productive to not run 95 and newer cars on the dyno. How does that make ANY sense.

For justification, you will likely see what has become the mantra of government- "It disproportionately impacts the underserved members of the community".

Whole lotta conjecture here. He's saying his personal cost to smog old cars is increasing to the point where he might stop doing it...as plenty of shops have. Luckily, there are tons of other shops who still do it, and that is unlikely to change.

There's no "government intent," it's just incredibly hard to change these laws because very (very) few people care about them, and there's no data anyone can point to that shows how little classic cars contribute to pollution.

Same as always. It's either worth it for you to pay the sunshine tax or it ain't. I'm not about to sell my classics if the biennial cost to smog them doubles.

'96 and newer vehicles have OBD II computers that the tech all the stuff they normally need to test on a dyno. That's why they're so much cheaper to smog.

Edit: Wait...I think you still have to smog these suckers on a dyno. At least I have with my cars. Probably ignore this post...

I don’t know the year switch. 96 gets the dyno and the 07 does not.

We are the government.

Vote them out, run yourself, or cheat their stupid system.
