Chip on Fan Blade - Concern or small enough to leave?

Hi everyone,

My fan has been chipped due to my own stupidity. The chip is rather small but am wondering if there would be any concern in putting the fan back on the car as is?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the replies! I'll clean it up nicely and put her back. The chip that came off was almost weightless and don't think it will throw off the balance.

stick a breaker bar in the fan to loosen the nut? Ask me how I know...... If you have the missing piece just JB Weld it in place and party on!

Looks like a Phillips screw driver, #4 I'd say, Craftsman.

Clean & eyeball the blade real good for any hairline fractures. Oh, buy the proper tool.

Ah, previous owner - can never trust them LOL

If it's catching your eye, as 87 said a bit of JB Weld, and enjoy the car.

Get a New Fan, install properly. This happened around 1200rpm, I shudder to think of this happening at freeway speeds when the fans doing around 5-6,000rpm.

At the least, get the balance checked.

I'd contact shawn @ tru-six for a proper repair...you only want to fix the fan blade once - JB weld would probablly hold for some time > but it's not a permanent fix.

Correct no jbweld .. if you look at my website I have this repair listed. Done hundreds of them and do them by TIG welding

Guys, the chip is kinda a big deal. Say it's a 79 911SC with a fan ratio of 1.8:1. At an engine speed of 6000rpm, the fan is turning almost 11,000rpm. Fix it the right way or replace it.

Really ?

A defect free fan other than one chip like that is fine, leaving cosmetics aside.

If you do decide to use it sans repair you should absolutely radius any fractured edge. This will mitigate, but not eliminate as with a TIG repair, future failure. Use a small Dremel tool or disk to do this. Fractured metal edges will be the first to fail.
