Saw 996 Turbo Today
Today was one of the few times I drove the 930 to work. During my lunch break I ended up driving next to a 996 turbo for about 5 minutes. First complaint, I couldn't even hear the car!! Sounded like anything else on the road. Second complaint, the driver didn't look at me once!!! Now I have a borla exhaust that is pretty damn loud and there is no way he didn't hear my car with his windows down. I can't believe this guy didn't even acknowledge another turbo owner. Granted his is more than half the price of my house but come on!!! I was waiting for the moment to give him the thumbs up. Then we ended both getting on the Highway together. Here we have a nice long on ramp and what does he do......takes his time to find the speed limit.
![]() ![]() ![]() I am a pretty young porsche owner at 25 and I look about 21. I don't know if he thought I was a little spoil kid or what. Are there many other young porsche owners out there??? By the way, I can only afford the car because I work my a** off as an product engineer, I am married to someone who makes about as much as me (dinks), we don't have kids, I drive an old Subaru everyday, and I paid less for my porsche than most people pay for their SUV's. Sorry to go off on a tangent but I get a lot of glares from people in my car. It makes me mad because I have never had a car like this, and now that I finally get my dream car, I get a bunch of a** holes glaring at me thinking I am some little spoiled kid!! Does the glaring ever go away or does it always exist with a car like this?? The only good thing about the glaring is it makes me want the take the country roads to get away from the people!! ![]() |

I wouldn't get torqued over it, that ***** happens to me all the time. A guy was right beside me on the way to the office today in a nice silver 993 and didn't even glance in my direction. There is no way that you can miss my car, he was just too stupid to know what it was.

I live i So Cal, am 18 with a 911SC and nobody gives a *****. As a matter of fact, nobody really even looks over at any Porsches there are so many here. I like my car, don't get dirty looks and don't generally encounter jealous people often.

Unfortunately a Porsche owner doesn't necessarily make a Porsche enthusiast.
What part of the country are you from? I just turned twenty and get mostly thumbs up from people when I drive my 930. There are a few idiots that glare, but not that many.

I think you guys need to chill. While I admire your enthusiasm for keeping your car updated and unique, do you need to constantly be given the "thumbs up" to validate your efforts? Honestly, I love the brand and have a keen understanding of the history of Porsche but I am not going to go around town and "thumbs up" every P-car I see. Plus, the last thing I want is some 25 year old who looks 21 wanting to drag me on an on ramp and accuse me of driving like a grandma. Keep in mind, that 996TT could have BLOWN you away before you took your first breath. Get over it.

I see 996TT's everyday. Saw one this morning at the cafe. At 6am in the empty streets, it actually sounded pretty good pulling away. The driver was an old guy, but I could hear him stomp it through the intersection. True, most guys with those cars couldn't give a ***** about my Porsche. That's why I LOVE to see 914 guys hand them their ass at the autocross! Beautiful!

When people are as oblivious as that 996 owner, it makes me think that they don't see how wonderful driving is behind the wheel of a Porsche. The car is wasted on them.

I agree with adscab. Chill! You may appear to some
to be insecure and needy. Been there, done that! Benson ![]()

Ha, I had the opposite last week. I was stopped behind a beautiful black 993 cab at a roundabout. He saw me in the mirror and gave it a wind up as he took off, then floored it as he got on the onramp to the motorway. The SC fared ok and after about 300 meters I was about 30 meters back, so that was ok. We were both driving at speeds upto 160 kms in light traffic so he was as silly as me despite his age group and we both did big smiles as we passed eachother.

I agree with Yargk. I don't expect a thumbs up or acknowledgment everytime I run across a porsche owner. But I was driving and stopping at stop lights next to the guy for 5 minutes down Woodward ave in Royal Oak, MI. In addition I am not one for drag racing on the street. Can you honestly tell me that when you take your porsche out and are getting on a highway with a wide open on ramp, you don't give the car a little gas!!! Also as a side note, my 930 could give a 996 turbo some competition, especially when it's driven by someone as clueless as that.
Maybe I should go back to the VW crowd. When I had my GTI, everyone other GTI owner would go out of there way to wave and give the thumbs up. It's not about getting attention, it's about showing appreciation for such amazing cars. Last edited by doorman930; 05-14-2003 at 03:45 PM.. |

It has nothing to do with validation, insecurity or neediness. Like Colin said, it's camraderie. Porsche are not just transportation and for most Porsche owners, getting one was a life goal. When i used to ride motorcycles, i waved at everything on two wheels and 9 times out of 10 they waved back, BMW, Harley or crotchrocket.

Hi doorman,
I'm with you. I like to share the joy of these cars with others. And, I really like to romp on the gas when I can! I expect other p-car owners to have the same joy. Troy

wave, quick flash of the lights, it is just a simple jester to say "hey" and nothing more...basic customs and courtesy!

Adscab--
Just FYI, a 996 tt cannot blow ME away, and I own a 930. In fact, there are many, many 930s out there that can humiliate a stock 996 tt on an onramp. We've had years to tune our cars, and 996 tt owners aren't (yet) big on mods to their cars. 370 to the wheels on a 3400 lb car vs. 500+ to the wheels on a 2800 lb car? You're right. NO contest. The 996 would be sucking fumes ![]() As to waving or otherwise acknowledging a Porsche owner, I do it, but I don't get too exercised if somebody doesn't. Life's too short to worry about it. |

I check out every Porsche I see. Other Porsche drivers check my car out. Some could give a rats a$$. It feels good when I drive by a nice 911 or 356 914 924 944 993 996 930 951 and we both wave or nod our heads.

I compare the wave or flash to the salute in the military. Its an acknowledgement of two folks in an honored profession. Comrades in arms or in the satisfaction of owning something in common and special. A way of saying "hey you and I are part of this great thing".

Some good discussion here, I am also in SF bay area, 22 years old w/ a red SC. I see lots of 996's, but I dont let it bother me if they aren't waving. I also tend to ignore people who glare (although not that common) I think that it is cool when people do but doesnt bother me when they dont. I did like the camraderie on the motorcycles though. I am 22 w a Red 83 SC.

I drove the 996 turbo last week. My parents had a party and one of the attendies had one. He took notice of my 911 and we started to talk shop. Then he asked if I wanted to take it for a spin. Holy Jesus is it fast. I hit 120 at the bottom of 4th gear and the ran out of road. I wish I could have gotten to 5th and am glad I didn't get to 6th (scary). My only complaint about the car is the interior had some cheesy interior pieces. Kinda like a carbon fiber kit but it was light silver plastic.
Anyway it was the highlight of the day. |

Bruce, I wouldn't be so fast to discount some of the 996 turbo cars or their owners. Check out the rennlist forum for those cars - there are several guys with well over 500 hp going to the wheels...and there's 4 of em to put the power down
