Drain plug depth question...

I changed my oil for the first time in my 76 911S since purchasing it 3 weeks ago. The previous owner mentioned that it needed an oil change, so in addition to a new filter, crush washer, sump gasket and nuts and washers, I picked up a new magnetic drain plug. The new drain plug is about a quarter to half inch longer than the plug that was in the car. When I went to screw it in it would only go in about half way. Is the oil tank on this car only made for a cetain depth plug? Or is it just that the threads deeper in the oil tank are gunked up from never being used? I ended up using the old, non-magnetic plug with a new crush washer.
Thanks in advance,
Jon

P.S. My first experience changin the oil in the 911 was surprisingly clean! No catastrophes :D

I have no clue... But how are you liking your new car? Have any pictures?

I absolutely love the car! I have lusted after a Porsche 911 since I was a kid. The car needs work, but I have the patience and the desire to get it in perfect shape (doing most of the work myself). I have a pic, but I'm not sure how to post it. Look forward to more interaction on the forum.

And then you can post a picture if it isn't too big
