Paint Flywheel in Car?!

This probably is a crazy idea, but I have a genuine desire to paint the flywheel in my 1980 SC. Not going to pull my engine to paint a flywheel, so thought I’d ask if anyone has ever done this with engine in car. I know there would be lots to taping, protecting surfaces, etc. Just wondered if there is a possibility of getting a decent result doing this?

Thanks. Will entertain all opinions from “your absolutely crazy” to “great idea, here’s how I did it”, and anything in between.

Phil

I would recommend painting the pistons and rotor surfaces as well to match.

I think he means the fan. You mean the fan right? It's way too hard to paint it in the car.

Also dont paint it. Unless you paint it a very subtle color like gray or black. Cerekote only imho. If you powdercoat it, tape the edges as they can scrape the housing.

Also, for god's sake don't paint it red, or rattle can it.

I just spent good money to get my fan stripped of the crappy paint and then properly coated. Highly recommend going that route

Remove it and send it to one of the two guys that do it here on the forum. The above look is the best.

A PO had rattle canned the fan in our 84 Carrera in-situ…looked like it had leprosy.

If we were ever to cross paths, I’d stab him in the eye with a soldering iron.

Please do things right or leave them be. Pull the fan and have it properly restored and Cerekote it. You will not regret that.

What's wrong with painting the backside of the flywheel? It's a little anal, but what the hey.

Your car, your flywheel. Someone out there will be envious.

If you go for it, show us your setup to apply paint through the clutch release hole in the bell housing.

Thanks,
Sherwood

I'd never really thought about it. So 3,000prm and spray through the hole for 60 seconds is what you recommend?
