pertronix ignitor install - tips?
 

About to install pertronix ignitor to Bosch distributor on my 72S.
Install looks pretty straight-forward.
Any tips, pitfalls to avoid or suggestions from anyone who has installed already would be appreciated.

Do a search in this news group. There has been a lot of info written on the pertronix. Not sure about your older Porsche but if you have a CDI box the recommendation is not to connect the + wire of the Pertronix to the coil + side, instead connect it to the middle fuse in the engine compartment to the left of the engine.

I have the Pertronix setup and it's wired to the pos side of the coil and I'm having a serious cold-start problem (which you have helped me with on another post). Could this be my problem??? I do get a nice, fat spark at plug #1, but the car won't start cold. Thanks!

I had a 911 with points. I installed the pertronix according to the instruction that came with it and the car wouldn't start. I called the company that I brought the Pertrnix from and they said not to install it according to the instruction but to connect the wire from the distributor to the negative wire to the pertronix and the + wire to the pertronix to a switched + terminal.

I decided to reinstall the point back in the distributor and not install the Pertronix. Car started right up and never had a cold start problem. I think that the only way that the pertronix will work according to the installation instruction is if you replace the coil with a super (?) coil. Do a search on DMX. He connected his pertronix per the instruction, but he replace the coil.

FWIW, I talked over the pertronix with Gordon, my favorite wrench. He commented that he had trouble making the work in the "S" dizzy. Then, reading an ad for them in one of the catalogs, I noted that it was listed for the '72 T, but NOT the S...
Anybody care to add to this? Dizzys are different between S and T in '72???:confused:

a Bosch Dizzy is a Bosch dizzy.. even the advance curve is the same on the S and T in'72 according to the '72 & '73 Tech. Spec. book............Ron

I don't know about 911s, but I have one in my 914. All I can say is that if everything looks perfect and your car won't start, welcome to the club. I bought two in a row that just plain didn't work. Third times the charm with low quality electronics, i guess...

So you're saying I connect the wire which originally attched to the condensor to the - (black) wire & the + (red) wire to the second fuse (rear window defost) on the engine fusebox?
As far as I know - the Bosch distributors across the model range T, E & S for each year were the same.
Anyone else like to pitch in before I install?

If your ignition system is not a CDI (capacitive discharge ignition) system then you can connect the pertronix per the instruction, red wire to positive coil, but if you have a cdi system, the red wire is connected to a fuse circuit that is turn on and off by the ignition key (switch fuse).

if your system is a cdi or msd then connect red to #2 fuse in rear panel and black to the wires that currently leave the distributor and run to the tach, and the cdi, use heat shrink connectors. we put this in 2 weeks ago and the car runs fantastic.

I ran the pos/neg wire out a small hole in the dizzy. The points previously connected to negative here (I think). I slipped the connection point out, ran the wires through. I'm concerned about the risk of chewing the wires up somehow inside the dizzy. Any comments? Thanks.

today i buy pertronix and i want to install to 2.7 with stock cd box ,before i check what you told about wires: red for the fuse box and black to - of coil... what are you doing with the black and black/purple on the side of the distributor ?

Raynald. Email me and I will send you a pic. Basically, the wires that were connected to the side of your dizzy are both connected to the black wire of the Pertronix. poorsha@shaw.ca Mine worked perfect first time.

if you have CDI attach the red wire on the petronix unit to a 12v power source that is on when the ignition is in the run position. then connect the black wire to the wire your points used to attach to.

if you don't have CDI attach the red wire to coil positive and the black wire to coil negative and run 12v power that is on when the ignition is in the run position to the coil positive.

yes do not connect the black wire to the coil if you have a cdi or a msd type of ignition. the black wire should be connected to the wires that currently connect to the points with a cdi or msd.
