Help - no 12v at AC fan control connection plug
 

I have the Griffiths variable fan speed control option. The AC has very recently worked on and off, now not working. Where I'm at now is checking the volts at the original plug at the two wires/points that Griffiths wants connected going to his switch.

There are two connections:
1 - solid red (I think the color is wrong in Bentley shows REWHITE) - this comes from the AIR CONDITIONER RELAY - checked with engine running.

2 - green and white - this goes to the compressor clutch

I'm looking for the AIR CONDITIONER RELAY - any ideas on where it is will be very helpful. I don't think this is the same relay found in the smugglers box on the side of the evap. fan.

on my 88, their are two relays that i know of. Smuggler box passenger side for the blower and main fuse panel fuse #2 and relay #6

In Bentley #6 is labeled as "A/C condenser blower" so that's why I thought it might not be the "AIR CONDITIONER RELAY". Since it is on the main panel it probably is the air conditioner relay.

Maybe I can "test" #6 relay by putting another one in there. Any ideas on that?

yes just swap #6 with #1 "power windows"

That is IF yours is same year as mine. What year is your 911 - i have bentley open right now due to faulty evaporations motor on mine

The #6 relay is round and goes in the top of the trunk fuse panel. In Pelican air conditioner relays are showing as the square type. So I'm a bit confused.

I have an 89. So the names on the "round" relays are different? I need to find a listing of amp carrying for the different positions of the round relays. I think they go by color.

There are multiple fuses and relays for the AC for our cars. The ac condenser blower is red round relay. The evaporator blower is in smuggler box and is square and silver or if newer black

I just checked, they all have the same part number so I guess they are all the same. Duh.
I'll try fog lights (position #5) put in position #6.

Well, it looks like the relay in the smugglers box (has a fuse) was at least part of the issue.
Here is what I found so far and a guess at what happened.
1 - The clutch wire grounded to the chassis and blew the fuse on smugglers box relay.
2 - I found that issue
3 - I replaced the fuse but failed to realize the connection was not very good considering the springiness of the fuse tabs. This ended up with the replacement fuse not connecting very well and it worked on and off.
4 - pulled the relay out and set the tabs better I hope. All seems working now. Will reassemble all the crap and test tomorrow.
Learned.... the AC relay is in the smugglers box and may have an iffy fuse. Note to self - don't have things short out, put on a cover or properly tie wrap as it was before. Not too smart on my part.

I need to buy a new 16 amp relay with a 16 amp fuse that is ATC style.

It would not be a bad idea to replace this if you have the old style fuse.

Don’t feel bad. You can do everything exactly right and the parts still fail. I am on my third blower motor in 5 years. I wish it was my relay- but it is the motor. This time I am replacing with Charlie’s cyclone.

Good luck with that. Let us know how it turns out. If I went that way I would have to source an earlier style of box.

I should have posted the picture of the problematic relay. It was good that the relay had a fuse "built in". I'm not sure there is another fuse behind it other than the 25amp fuse #2. I think a relay with an ATC style fuse will be better. In my case the "tabs" were loose after I put the new fuse in but I didn't realize they were loose because the insertion force is high but the tabs don't snap back very well. The fuse I put back in there was a 16amp. At least that's what it said on the side of the fuse.

Often the plastic core bullet fuses get soft from heat, and get squashed, and no contact. Buy a set of ceramic fuses with copper connectors, the good type. Replace any plastic fuse in use with the good ones. It will solve many weird issues on our cars.

I think the one I found (possibly original?) that I blew was ceramic. The replacement is ceramic. I still don't like this particular design for holding that sort of fuse. The tabs don't have enough spring back. I want to replace it with a relay with an ATC fuse.
