Question Need Help Removing Rear Wheel Bearings

Weekend Project Update ... now going on three.

What started out as a simple single CV Boot replacement on my 85 930 has grown into the following:

CV boot replacement turned into…
Replacing all four CV boots turned into…
Replacing all four CV joints turned into…
Replacing all four emergency brake shoes turned into
Replacing drivers side rear wheel bearings

So my $12 dollar project has now cost me several hundred dollars. The only good thing is that I’ve learned a lot throughout this process.

Basically when I try to spin the rear stub axel, it’s very difficult to turn (this is with the rear drive axels removed BTW). Unlike the passenger side which spins freely.

I’ve read from numerous sources that replacing the rear wheels bearings isn’t for the faint at heart. So I am looking for the simplest method to accomplish this.I would prefer not to remove the rear trailing arm if possible.

I noticed that Performance Products (Ack!) offers a rear bearing puller tool. But it’s ridiculously expensive and I don’t plan to use it that often. Does anybody have one of these they would be willing to loan or rent?

What are my other options and does anyone have any tricks or tips that might help?

T-Ruf, I went through the same ordeal with my wide body
Carrera. Wayne sells the tool but won,t rent it. I made one
for about $45.00 ( that included the price of a 3/4 metric
scoket set from Harbor Freight). Your car I believe has tapered
bearing which are allot easier to remove than the Carrera
rear wheel bearing. Drive out the axel stub then pull out the bearings with a bearing puller or heat the perimeter of the
swing arm and tap it out there is a thred on this just go to rear wheel bearing searce.

Did a search, which I should have done in the first place. PM’ed Cary, hoping he can help make my life a little easier.

Any other suggestion specific to the 930 would be appreciated…

I seemed to remember someone taking the arms to a machine shop and having them press the old out and install the new for $40.00, but then again I am getting older and the CRS (Can't Remember Kaka) sometimes kicks in and...what was the topic?

I brought my trailing arms to a hack with a press. He got them out under my watchful eye with some advice as well.

But I don't think that T-Ruf wants to add an alignment, trailing arm bushings and while you have the whole suspension apart a Neatrix spring plate upgrade... does he?

Neil,

Nope, you are correct. I would like to accomplish this with the trailing arm installed.

took my trailing arms along to a local machine shop last week - total cost was £15 for both wheel bearings. they used a hydraulic press and I got the arms back within a couple of hours. they also commented that it was a lot easier than many front wheel drive cars.
