Thumbs up Targa Newfoundland

As I was finishing up lunch I caught a few minutes of the Targa Newfoundland recap on SpeedTV. It looked a lot like some of the events that CamB has described down in NZ. There seemed to be a number of Aussie who came up for the event. From what I saw they had a few seconds of in-car from a '72 (T?) and the expiration a 4WD Turbo, so there is definitely some 911 content. There was also a good write-up I saw a few months ago in our local PCA magazine from someone who went up for the event.

It looked like a lot of fun! Keep your eyes on the SpeedTV listings and maybe you can find a rebroadcast. Better yet, maybe someone should go. Unfortunately my car is not up to snuff for that kind of event.

Saw that too, John. Sad that TT blew up.

I did some work in Nfld. a few years ago. Lovely country that would remind you of Ireland. But the winters? You don't want to know!

I think that they ran the event in what the locals would call "summer". If this is the case, it certainly looked cold and damp enough!

A few years ago my wife and I were up in Nova Scotia (A few hundred miles south of Newfoundland) during the last week of June. To share the high-points/low points of the experience to give some perspective to the majority of the people on this BBS who seem to hail from California.

"Low point" (not really): If you were anywhere within 100 yards of the water, if felt like what us New Englanders call fall. Maybe 50 degrees and damp.

"High point": The people. First everyone was really pleasent and nice. Second; I think the relatively densely populated Nova Scotia (at least compared to Newfoundland!) has maybe 900,000 people in it -- including Halifax! Keep in mind that this is an area of maybe half the size of New England. After returning from NS, we visited my inlaws in NYC where it dawned on me that there were most likely that many people within the sound of my voice. Needless to say, we prefered NS to NYC -- any day!

Don't forget the similar event in Australia - Targa Tasmania - which Ryan (obrut) is competing in right now, I think.

I just watched coverage of a one day, 80-100 mile (of competitive stages) event here - the Targa Bambina. It was won by a BMW 2002 Turbo!*

* Virtually no part of which is not modified extensively. It is an awesome car!

There was an article about the Targa a couple of months ago in Car and Driver. The event took place in September of last year and is supposed to be a yearly event. I was in St. John's in February (my son-in-law played for the SJ Maple Leafs this season) and yes there was a lot of snow. But all the locals told me that last winter there was not much snow all winter. I guess it is like anywhere else, the amount varies from year to year.
