1966 Porsche hot rod/outlaw home build: 6ix Shooter
Hey everyone. I'm new to the Porsche world/forums but my background is in building and designing muscle car parts. Mainly I used to build road race 1st gen Camaros and manufactured parts to allow them to accept late model technology into the car without cutting or welding. Things like LS1 engine mounts, tri-Y headers, fabricated oil pans, T56 six speed installation kits, and even forged aluminum spindles that improved negative camber gain, reduced bumpsteer, and allowed the use of C5 Corvette brakes and seal hub assemblies. The company I founded was called American Touring Specialties and in the Pro-Touring segment, I had a nice little niche carved out.
I sold that company in 2009 to Speedtech Performance and went to work for an OEM as a factory rep. Last month I sold my road race car, a 1968 Camaro that was built on a 0.90" wall chromoly tube chassis and used all the under pinnings of a 1999 C5 Corvette; the aluminum suspension and cradles, the EFI LS1 engine, the rear mounted T56 six speed transaxle, and the car was widened almost 10" front and rear. It was rolling on HRE 542R 18" wheels with Michelin road race slicks. The project stalled as I travel for work, and I lost interest in completing it. I've been a huge Porsche fan since I was a child and always wanted a 911. Well, I can't afford one so I ended up buying a 912 back in 2019 locally here in Phoenix, AZ. This is the car I bought. It had some very questionable repairs done to it, like a 930 updated back end, was wide bodied in steel at some point in the 80s or 90s, and the front pan where the control arms bolt to was so rusted you'd swear it was held together by mere molecules. Oh and it was hit and totaled at some point in the front and carried a salvaged title. I hated the whale tail, and the rear bumper wasn't even wide enough to fit the flares. Plus those side mirrors. BARF. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() But it ran, steered, and brakes, and I was able to get it home for the low price of roughly $16K. Not horrible considering the rest of the car has no rust and is in decent enough shape. I was pretty happy to own a Porsche. ![]() |

The wiring is a rats nest of U-haul circuit clip in connectors, had a huge amp for the stereo, and the Matco paint job got into the frunk and over the spare tire.
![]() So I got it up on stands to see how bad the rust was by the front control arms. ![]() OK. It's pretty bad. ![]() Oh. It's down right dangerous. While I formulated a plan to tackle that job, I started trying to find body panels to convert the car back to the factory-ish look. The owner I bought it from had found a '66 decklid from a 911T, and was nice enough to let me buy it. He also had a spare rear fiberglass bumper, so I took that as well to get it back to looking more correct and get rid of the horrible rear fender to bumper gap. Being a car with tons of patina, I decided to run the decklid as fast as possible. I wanted the external hinges, so I bought a set and polished them to a mirror finish. Tested the placement on the whale tail. ![]() ![]() I liked the look. I'll need to drill, but I'm not ready yet and I want to see the body lines of the split vent decklid. ![]() Oh yeah. I love that so much more, even in primer with old duct tape residue. Bumper even looks wide enough. Maybe? ![]() Somewhere I lost the pics of it going to the paint shop, but I'll spare you the suspense. The bumper was not wide enough. Had to order one that was like 11" wider than factory or something crazy like that. While at my buddies shop getting the panels painted, I had them paint a set of NOS 993 aero side mirrors, and a set of RSR tail light housings. Drilled for the hinges and test fit the decklid and rear bumper. ![]() Test fitting the rear tail light housings ![]() Starting to look like a '66 Porsche again. ![]() |

I knew the front pan would be a job I wasn't willing to try, so I had a local guy weld in a new one for me. Here is the car before I stripped the front end down.
![]() ![]() ![]() I started disassembly of the car in preparation for the pan replacement. ![]() I took the front end partially off as well. ![]() I wasn't able to get video or pics of the pan getting installed, but I do have the final result. ![]() So now I'm collecting parts. |

I apologize for the enormous pic sizes. I'll fix that going forward.
So plans for the car are to rebuild the front and rear suspension, upgrade the brakes with these: ![]() Re-wire the entire car with the Infinity box system, add some 17 or 18" wheels to make it look tough, and convert the 4 banger to a 6 cylinder. I bought the engine already from a member here. You might recognize it. ![]() It's Gabe's 3.2 liter from Project Avocado. It's running the ITBs, the dual plugs and the MS3 EFI system. Since this thing is a salvaged title non matching patina 912, I figured I'd go hog wild and modify it to be a great driver. I'll not be making it prettier or nicer in any way externally though, and will keep the theme of pantina by making it look worse with this hood wrap from the 73 RSR race car made to look like it was found in a barn after 50 years. ![]() |

So here is where I need help. I need lots of additional parts to start the engine swap, and that's where you all come in.
I've started a list of items I think I'll need and I'd love recommendations on brands to look at to source them. Items to secure for install: Engine frame mounts (weld in) Engine mounts (semi solid) Engine mount cross brace Engine tin Engine bay seal Oil tank Oil lines Oil cooler Flywheel (special type?) Clutch and pressure plate New starter? Headers with 02 sensor Muffler (dual in and out?) Fuel pump Fuel pressure regulator Fuel lines (inlet and return) New tank (in tank mounted pump option?) Body/chassis wiring harness (infinity box) Tow hook I'll be keeping the 901 trans, and the engine is from an 82 911. I know I'll need a special flywheel, but what kind? What headers would you guys run? I'd prefer stainless and under $1K if possible. Also when I built cars, we would run Peterson oil tanks for our dry sump. Can I do that with these engines or do I have to run the factory oil tank? If I don't have to, can I put the tank up front in the Frunk or does that cause oil lines running all over the place? Was there a fuel tank that used an intake pump that could give out enough pressure to run EFI? Do they have return lines built in? Anyone make the frame mounts for the engine, or will I have to cut some out of a car? Thanks for the help everyone. |

Fun project! The widebody with flat decklid has always been a favorite look of mine. As for the pics, I know you said you would make smaller going forward, I'd say most people are still running non 4k monitors. So pics have to be no more than 1080p dimensions for probably 90% of us to see the entire pic on 1 page without having to scroll sideways or zoom out making the text tiny.
There's a way you can fix the pics in an old posts: Start a new post, upload the pics to that draft and then copy the url, delete the draft, then go back and edit the original post and paste the new URL inside it. After a while you can't edit the post, I think it's like 90 days or something around that. To answer your questions, most of that info is here on the forums, searching using the pelican search is biased toward recent posts and makes finding stuff much harder. I use this custom google search function and it works wonders. The 901 will be cool with the dog leg setup and fits the early tub. I just sold a 66 912 so interested in following along with this project. Good luck!
