Frozen advance plate

The advance plate with the 3 screws for the field coil assy should rotate freely from the plate that the vacuum pod connecting rod is on. You will have to soak the center pieces and get them freed up and then disassemble the 2 halves and clean and lube for proper function.

Thanks porschyard - that was the problem. Once I was able to get it to rotate, the arm was free to come off. Seems so obvious now, I'm not sure how I missed it -

As to your question about the Rauch and Spiegel (Smoke and Mirrors) vacuum pod IIRC they only make 2 different versions and both are for N/A 2.7 and 3.0
The one for the 78-79 SC will bolt up but will have the wrong timing curve for a 3.3 turbo.

If you can't find a used or NOS vacuum pod just plug the vacuum line and set timing at 28-30 degrees BTDC @4K Rpm depending on engine configuration, boost level and fuel octane and let the timing at idle fall where it may which will probably be around 12-15 BTDC.

Disabling the vacuum and setting the timing to what you recommend, is probably what I'll end up doing for the short term. I'm looking for a longer term solution for boost control timing and performance/economy if possible. Was hoping the R&S might work, but doesn't sound too promising. Also have a 911SC dual pot canister that I hoped would work, but again the advance curve may not be compatible. Had hoped the original dual pot was re-buildable, but that's not looking too promising either.
I've been working my way through the Ultimate 930 Distributor, advance, retard, timing, Turbo lag, MSD, mod, thread to understand how the system operates and find a better solution. So far, using the MSD might be a better option, though a bit pricey -

Another option would be to run a programmable CD unit from Classicretrofit, contact Johnny H on this forum and I am sure he can answer any questions you may have. Richard
