Key broke off in ignition.
So I have snapped the ignition key off inside the lock. It’s turned to the right so I have not had much luck trying to fish the broken piece out. The steering is not locked at this point but I can’t turn the ignition lock either direction with the stub of the key. Are there any hints on trying to get the key out ? Can I take the lock tumbler out without removing the rest of the steering lock mechanism? I’m not sure where to start on fixing this problem. Thanks, Andy.

Is there enough of a stub sticking out that you can use needle point vice grips?

Do a search for, broken ignition key, there are three threads on the subject.

No, the lock tumbler won’t come out without first drilling out a small pin on the side of the ignition. I would get some steel picks free m the hardware store and use them on each side of the broken key to work it out. Or if you have thin tweezers or forceps that can grab it. Then head to your local locksmith if that’s your only key.

I haven't ever tried it, but I saw a guy on the internet heat up the end of a glue stick, place it on the broken key part, then allow it to cool on the key so it could then be pulled out. Worth a try if you have a glue stick from a glue gun available.

Superglue the end of your key, stick it and, wait 5 min and pull out?
Disclaimer: this is just a suggestion I have never tried myself, nor do I know it will work...

No stub sticking out:/. I did a search and two of the three threads seem to be people complaining about phishing or some scam. The rest is the same info here. The problem is the key is turned a little inside the lock. I have gone to the hardware store and bought the small picks but since the key is not inline with the slot I can’t pull it back out. Because of this I also don’t think the glue trick will work. Just wondering how to go about replacing the whole unit. Is it going to be the lock tumbler or the whole steering lock unit? Will I then have to replace the door and hood locks?

To make all this worse... I decided to drive my 944 to town today. It hasn’t been driven in a bit due to recent snowfall. Fired right up and made it about 25 miles towards town when it decided to up and die. Currently sitting on the side of the road awaiting tow truck to have the 944 towed to the same shop where the 911 is at. Not the greatest Porsche day ever 🙄

My key broke off the ignition while in the custody of a shop and so it was their problem to rectify- it took a lot of time and some luck but they were able to get it out and saved themselves a big pain - ordering tumbler from Porsche to match key was going to cost something like $500 but would at least have avoided replacing numerous locks; 2 x doors, frunk, glove box. Good luck Jason

Use the key stub to turn the lock so it lines up and broken part can be removed.
If nothing else works, pull the ignition and take it to your locksmith. They will fix it.

If you can turn it back with small screwdriver then use a shop vacuum and it will suck the key stub right out

So the good news is that your steering wheel is not locked.
Pull out the ignition switch and use a screw driver to crank it over.... I’ve been doing this for a year since my lock mechanism **** the bed on me.... it works just fine but looks ghetto....whatever. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Thanks for all the tips... We’ll see how this works out! Going to fix the 944 first though. The 911 doesn’t come out till summer!

A glue stick should be melted. Apply hot glue to the toothpick's tip. After that, carefully put the extractor tool into the keyhole. Wait for the adhesive to dry after touching the broken key with the tool. Pull the tool with the broken key outward once you've finished.

Years ago… had key break off in the drivers door lock.
Used a good magnet to “pull” it out. Took only a few minutes. Regards, JT |
