What is a SC fireing order anyway? Ignition problems
Can someone verify that the firing order for a 1983 SC, is it 1-5-3-4-2-6?
I just got the engine running.... its a stock 3.0 with Webers and a MSD... it just seems to be making noise above 300rpm, like it isn't advancing. Then my timing light went out so I have no idea where TDC is, I ordered a new better timing light and I know I need a Bently manual. The thing is this is my first 3.0 so I'm not sure if I am doing something wrong. Any help would be awsome |
1-6-2-4-3-5
There should be a sticker to the right of the hood latch. Tom |
All 911's are 1-6-2-4-3-5 ....not just SC's...

It may well be that the distributor is not advancing since the vacuum advance/retard lines have nowhere to go on the carbs. That could be a big stumbling block when fitting carbs in place of CIS injection...how do you compensate for all the advance you just eliminated to make it run right?

THe SC vaccum advance wasn't really worth much anyway, and many people disconnect it and just set the static timing ahead a bit. I think like to 35 degrees at whatever the high RPM spec is...

There is no sticker... this engine is an 1983 SC engine and it is in a 1973 914. I have been told that the vacume thing on the distributor is for retard only, I'm no retard so idon't need it (ha ha). I know the regular fireing order is 1-6-2-4-3-5 but pelicans new engine book says it is 1-5-3-4-2-6 although it says that in a very confusing unclear way.
I'm just kinda stumped, although I await a new timing light and maybe a book on this engine. Can someone verify what the actual fireing order is? I know all 911s are not the same. |
As I said...*all* ( stock) 911's are 1-6-2-4-3-5......at least all the *real* air-cooled 911's :)

Ok here is the problem... Waynes book says switch a few wires, but the figure that says this fails to mention that the 3.0SC engine has a counter clockwise distributor rotation.
So I have the right firing order now, the problem is I can not find the TDC mark on the flywheel (this is in a 914-6.. thus the need to find a TDC on the flywheel) I am using a KEP conversion flywheel (9 bolt crank to 901 tans). I'm thinking either the flywheel mark is in the wrong place (maybe it is supposed to be read from the bottom of the trans). Or something is hooked up backward on the MSD box (2 wires from distributor... if they are hooked up backward then the engine runs at 28 degrees advance). When I try advancing the distributor the engine does not accelerate like it should, it actually starts to die. Any ideas anyone? Thanks. What a pain in the ass. |
Are you looking on the pulley or the flywheel?
|
Its in a 914-6, you cant see the pulley when the car is running. I wish you could. Some people cute a hole in the firewall and do the timming from inside the car, nice but not for a street car. :p

I know an old post but couldn't help myself. I have a 914-6 and it is a bi@#% to find the timing marks on the flywheel. I brought mine to TDC with the pulley and fan housing aligned and then marked the flywheel. Then I used a timing light that had advance adjustment and used that to set the advance. good luck

So I found the problem out anyway.... KEP's conversion flywheel had the TDC mark in the wrong position. Also learnt fast that the SC firing order is the same as all the others but the distributor turns in a counter clockwise rotation.
The car runs great now, super fast in a 914. |
