Nathan, I love the look of your wheels! What has been done and who did it?

Wrong, and dangerous advice.

I wanted an alignment before a short trip up I-70 and the only shop who could schedule me was one who had done a good job setting up new diff gears in my vette. Unfortunately whoever did the alignment believed it was OK to raise the front end to get the laser to clear the spoiler.

The car drove like a '60s Galaxy with bad suspension, unbelievable. It tended to shift balance unpredictably going through twisties, scariest drive through Glenwood canyon in my life.

I like the wheels too, and am getting ready to re-do mine.
Your Carrera looks like it might be the same color as mine? is it Metallic black?
Nice ride Nathan

IMHO, too low in the rear, La Razza!

Nathan M 05-13-2003 12:18 PM

Thanks guys. The car feels to handle better than ever. The "pitching" from front to rear over the bumps seems much less, and it doesn't feel to understeer as much as it used to. There are no clearance problems at the rear as the wheels are only 7". I lowered the car by turning the front "screws" by half their travel and adjusting the rear eccentric bolts. As the car is European I guess it rides lower than the US anyway, so I haven't had to touch the torsion bars. (At least this means I'm only an hour from putting it back!) I love the look of the car but may just increase the rear by a half inch or so, purely for my own piece of mind. I'd hate to become grounded on one of the local speedbumps! I've got to have the alignment checked so this may highlight other issues (?). I've got my first trackday in the car a week on Monday so we'll have to see how it goes.

The wheels were this colour when I got the car, and from what I understand were available in Europe as an option with silver centres. I've merely stripped the laquer on the rims and polished them. I like the look of them too - it's a little different from the usual black centres. Oh, and yes, it's metallic black.

You might want to raise it. The PO of my car had the same set up and the suspension bottomed out on a couple of occasions over pot holes and bumps.

BTW I like your silver painted wheels, polished is too shiny for me.

How do you know if the suspension is bottoming out?

Adman 05-14-2003 05:10 AM

jluetjen ...Ditto everything you said! The trick is to find the balance between styling and performance. Try and get your car inspected for a DE with zero rake and lowered heavily without the proper torsion bar and shock changes. It wont happen. Limiting pitch and roll by just lowering creates a false sense of security. We see slammed cars at the track all the time and they do look sweet. What you dont see is the larger torsion bars,sway-bars and shock changes. One last word on Rake that some think is not important. Rake is the first thing that a qualified alignment tech checks. Until the rake is set properly he cant even attempt to align the car. JMHO
