Any Torontonians with a 3.2l want to take my car for a ride?

Howdy, just wondering if anyone in the Toronto area who owns a 3.2l 911 could spare 1/2 hour to take my (dad's) car for a spin. We just had the engine rebuilt top to bottom and I'm not convinced it is running perfect. It's an '87 911 with a steve wong chip and fabspeed catbypass, 964 cams, je pistons are new. When we first got it back from the mechanic it felt lethargic... i brought it back and they found a bad injector. It's better now, but somehow it still doesn't seem to have any power. The mechanic keeps telling me "you are comparing it to your '02 turbo, don't do that, the car runs fine".... so perhaps my assessment is skewed. However, he said the same thing to me when it had the bad injector, so i'm skeptical and thought i'd look for a second opinion.

Anyone with a 3.2L want to do me a favour and take 'er for a comparison spin? I'm out by Mosport Raceway but can make a trip anywhere in the GTA within reason.

What your mechanic said is complete crap. I've owned a modern TT (09) and many other 911's. My son's 88 911, albeit lightened a tad, is one of the fastest 911's I've ever driven. Was it 997 Turbo fast? Of course not and of course there's a difference. But I'm still able to feel a cars performance and know a duck when i see a duck,

Sounds like there's definitely something amiss. Take it to a local cars and coffee and find another owner.

are the 964 cams the same cams that were in the car? if not they can be disappointing . cam timing is vital with the 964 cam , header size? change to them ? compression and leak down ?
sounds like the mechanic is running away
just some thoughts

Is there anyone in the pca chapter around the gta who could help? I'm in Vancouver and will be out there on business in December but that's not much help. I have an 89 Carrera and it's mostly stock with a cat bypass and a chip, it pulls hard all the way without flat spots. It has had a top end rebuild and stock cams timed based on who knows what but yours should pull all the way, and well with those cams.

There's got to be another shop who can give you a second opinion locally out there too. Good luck.

Where are you located, there's some guys in our club with 3.2s, I could compare it to my 3.0 but they are different beasts.

Can you record a few 0-60 times and compare that with factory spec?

First thing to check> Make sure your Throttle plate is going full open when the accelerator is pressed to the floor. Pretty common miss when reinstalling an engine.

You might have better luck asking the same question on the Canada page here or on the Canada page on Rennlist

Have you tried Yarko at Response Engineering? He is right around the corner from you on Ashburn Rd in Port Perry. Scroll down…

take an advice and go to a different mechanic..the original mech. is making stories..they should never gave you the car after rebuild if it is not running correctly..also it has to be break in correct way...it sounds really the cam timing is done right...i wonder what is inside?

Pm me. Like Harv said, we have a group of 50/60 strong. We can compare.

Well... thanks for all the feedback. Once I realized a PCA shop was not far from me I decided to take it there. "There" being Response Engineering in Port Perry, ON.... thanks @uwon. Yarko took the car for a rip and said it is fine, runs great. He did mention that the new 964 cams move the torque lower in the RPM range so if my issue was that it didn't seem to have the 'go' up top that it had before, that may be why. So... I guess my assessment had been skewed by my '02 Turbo.

While at his shop we got talking about how to improve things with the 3.2l and started talking about SSI headers and exhaust.... he happened to have a new SSI system sitting on the shelf so I bought it for my dad and left the car there. He's putting it in next week. Going to try to wring every bit out of this 3.2 lol... now I just have to find a '2 out' rear valence here somewhere. =] I hope his heating still works after that. And i just remembered... we have to send his chip back to Steve Wong for a reflash taking into account the SSI.

I also let Yarko take my Turbo for a ride.... it has the GT2 clutch conversion and the throwout bearing is rattling around driving me insane. Two other mechanics said 'leave it until the clutch needs work, this is what a GT2 sounds like man!' But it makes me grumpy to hear that at full stop with the clutch out. He did remark at whatever tune was on my car suggesting Wow it has some get up and go. I took that to mean other 996 Turbo's weren't so high strung. Anyways, the point of that was to say... perhaps my ability to assess the 3.2l was that much more skewed by my car, knowing now it that it's tune is probably pushing the limit to get more punch.

Oh well, I think the one thing I've learned from all this is... Turbos are awesome. lol... I couldn't go back to a naturally aspirated 3.2l now.

Rolland, glad you made the acquaintance with Yarko. He runs a great outfit and is soooo knowledgeable.

I was always under the impression that SSI's were too small in diameter for a 3.2 ?
You would most likely benefit more by adding a 1 5/8 ID exaust header, especially with cams !
I'm surprised the guy even sold them to you as they're more suited for a 3.0 SC

I could be wrong ...

Avoid 2 out exhausts if you or your dad are sensitive to drone.

The sound of a 3.2 with 964 cams to SSIs, cat delete, to banana exhaust is the absolute best 911 sound ever created.
