turn signal and four way flashers not working
 

This is one of those "down the rabbit hole" stories. I recently had to remove the console on my 1987 911 Coupe to rebuilt the shifter mechanism. While in there I found that the capillary tube on the ac temp control was broken, the window defroster switch and the four way flasher switch all needed replacement. This has all been done and now the turn signals and hazard flasher do not work with either the replacement or original hazard switch in place.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

When I was installing my heated seat switch in my '87, I found that the plug ends for the defrost and hazard switches were so short and taut that they wouldn't stay plugged in. Try contorting yourself behind the console to check those connections. Also, check the fuses up front for turn signals. Easy to short when working on these old cars.

Look to see if the round plug (6 pin) is unplugged (where it passes through the bulkhead) just above your feet and to the right.. Most likely culprit.

Maybe the flasher unit gizmo (the thing that clicks when you signal), accessible from behind the tachometer (I think) or coming in from the frunk behind the dash. Relatively inexpensive piece, a bit of a pain to reach. Plug out, plug in. Skinny hands are the key, or triple jointed forearm.

I'd give it 2 wrenches out of 5 on the pain-in-the-neck scale.

Thanks for the suggestions. As expected, it appears the problem lies with the flasher unit itself. I pulled the unit and find that the relay has three spade connectors, but the connector itself has four. Pelican shows the unit should be a three prong unit. Which is correct, the three prong or four prong?

By the way, it is a pain to get out. Requires more force than you would expect and pain to reach.

Just to close this out, there were two problems. The switch on the counsol apparently had a short in it that was causing the flasher unit to burn out. I replaced the switch with a new one from Pelican, but made the mistake of buying a new flasher from a national parts change because of price and availability. That unit failed almost immediately and caused me to spend several more days trying to track down a problem that didn't really exist. Ordered a new Wehrle branded flasher for Pelican and that cured the problem.
