DD best battery for smugglers box???

Hi Guys,

Need a new battery. Trying to get a better corner balance by moving the battery to the smugglers box - but also want to have a battery that has durability for DD use. What is the biggest/best ?? battery to use.

I'd like to use the car for occasional track use and some DD use. The Optima 925 is the best i have found so far. Is there something stronger, more CCA/durable"??

Do Lithium batteries make sense???

Thanks,
chris

Have you seen this thread? Lucky Man's Lightweight Battery

My small lead acid battery has 540 cca. Seems plenty. IIRC weights around 19 lbs.

Here is a picture of mine. Made my own mounts. Ironically, my new iphone 12's camera sucks, so here is my best shot.

BTDT. Smugglers box is a pain for access and charging. I would just buy a lighter battery in the stock location. Odyssey pc680 used to be the go-to but they have gotten less reliable and more expensive. Deka makes a similar sized battery that works for less $. Several other options out there. I run a little Shorai in another track car and it's great, never needs a charge.

If you are going for a small battery, pair it with a high output alternator.

I have run a 925 with one of our high output alternators for 3 years now. That’s with electric AC and all the toys in my SC.

I run an antigravity ATX30. 880 cranking amps and weighs 6lbs, so I left it in the stock location for easy access (I agree, the smugglers box is a PITA to get to). Not crazy expensive at $360 retail.

It also has this:

"RE-START Technology intelligently monitors its voltage and will put itself to sleep if it senses over-discharge, yet amazingly saves just enough reserve energy to start your vehicle. Simply press the RE-START button, located on top of the battery, to start your vehicle and drive away. No need for jumper cables, booster pack or assistance"

In addition to RE-START, I use their bluetooth monitor. It alerts me (when in range) what the voltage is and tracks the voltage required to start the car. Not sure if this is super necessary, but was a fun add-on for $30

Why are the new pc680 less reliable now? Any further details on how or they changed? I have an older one may need another for another car.

Optima’s used to be great too 30yrs ago. Then johnson controls bought them out and changed their construction. I’ve had 3 or 4 of the older gel types, then I purchased brand new one that leaked, even more disappointing was dealing their claims department which was like pulling teeth.

I'm not saying anything specific changed on the PC680s, just my experience. I've bought 6+ of them through the years for various cars. They used to last at least a few years, but the last two died after one year so I switched.

I’ve run Odyssey batteries in all my collector cars for years. Never any problems or surprises. Lighter weight too.

That said those super lightweight Antigravity batteries look super tempting. Especially for newer liquid cooled Porsches with the high center mounted batteries.
