Problem seating springplate rubber
 

Hi guys,

Ik need some help from the "allmighty knowledgebase"
I've recently replaced my springplates (with new rubbers) but somehow the rubber keeps bulging from the rear torsion plate covers.
Is this normal and will the rubber seat when driving or am I doing something wrong?

I just finished this awesome video on Youtube about this procedure. If you forward to the end you can see his finished product and as far as I can tell there is no bushing visible around the torsion bar cover. Hope this helps.

A couple of questions, Who made the bushings?? and what did you use to assemble the bushings to the chassis/cover??

Springplates and rubbers are from dansk I believe. I put the covers on with lots of soap en tightened the bolts a few turns at a time each

Still have the original (non ajustable) spring plates. Maybe I should give them a try

Did you super glue the bushings to the spring plate tubes first?

That does look odd. I did this job years ago and searched far and wide to find a glue that actually worked, found some esoteric 3M adhesive that was supposed to work on steel and rubber under extreme conditions. It didn't, the first time I drove it in really cold weather the adhesion broke and I got low squeak over bigger bumps. I've gotten to where I ignore it...maybe I should have just used super glue. Since yours came pre attached maybe they will stick.

I’ve tried to to tighten the bolts several times and never noticed loose rubbers

Are the outer retainers original or aftermarket?

Are spacers needed between the threaded mounting bosses and the retainers? It's been a while, for me, but I recall that I needed 4-5 mm spacers to make the adjustables fit an early (this is a 1973?) car. Cylinder head washers did the trick, as I recall. All from distant memory, so don't pile on if I got wrong. All this to compensate for the greater thickness of the adjustable spring plates, compared with the originals.

You also want longer bolts and the thicker spacer for the lower, rear mounting bolt.

^ This. If it's the car from your "garage" link it's a 73. Did you put the spacer back in the rear bottom corner? The cover should be perpendicular to the ground like a T. If there's a weird angle to it, you may have left out the early car spacer.

It's just a single spacer. It's not one on every corner. You do use additional spacers if you use polybronze bushings, but not the rubber bushes.
