Turn Signals Not Working

I've been searching through all the turn signal threads and I've yet to find one that matches my symptoms.

1980 SC

Neither side of the turn signal works.
No recent work has been done or bulb changes. The only recent 'issue' I had was the speedometer stopped working. I pulled the gauge to look at wires. Pulled and reseated everything and pulled the sensor on the transmission. It started working again. Otherwise, nothing else has been done to the car electrically. Turn signals just stopped working a few weeks ago around the same time (but after) the speedometer stopped.

Here's the facts:

-Because of the turn signal issue, I replaced turn signal switch. (I have high beams again for the first time in 14 years!) Still no turn signals. (I have the headlight relay kit coming as well.)

-At no time during any of the variations below does either turn signal indicator on tach light up. I checked the left bulb and it appears good. (the blue high beam light comes on when I flash the high beams, but it seems dim to me.)

-Hazards (4-way flashers) work normally.

-All fuses are good.

-With key off, turn signal lamps light steadily (no flash) along with the brake light on that side and front corresponding headlight parking lamp (Not the main headlight) i.e. left turn signal cause both front left and rear left turn signal indicators light up at normal brightness along with the brake light and headlight on that side. I think I recall it would do this anyway when the turn signals did work.

-With key on (fuel pump on), turn signals do not work at all. No steady lights or anything.

-I pulled the flasher relay to inspect and clean.

-I have a new flasher relay on order but I don't have high hopes.

Not sure what else I can check or test. I have the electrical schematic but everything seems ok but the tach indicator lights not coming on even with the 4-way flashers.

I'm usually pretty good with electrical stuff but this has me a bit puzzled.

I'd replace the relay and see... Relay fixed the problem I had which seems somewhat similar to your case...

Check the pin connectors where they plug in under the dash. Check the connections at the light switch and hazard switch, something could have pulled loose when you were replacing the turn signal switch.

You can test the flasher with a test light to see if it’s sending the right signals out.

Do your back up lights work?

No but they didn’t work before when the turn signals were working. Shared fuse is good.

Thanks for the replies so far. I’ll continue testing connections for continuity while I’m waiting for the flasher relay to show up tomorrow.

Have you checked the wire for a loose connection at the fuse (11)...or voltage at the flasher (not really a relay)?

The below post provides the schematic which is valid for your 80SC. Since your four way flashers work then you do not have an issue with the flasher relay. When the four way flasher is active fuse 17 provides power to the flasher relay through the hazard switch at pin 30 to pin 49. I believe your problem is related to no power applied to the flasher relay when the four way flasher switch is off and power to the flasher relay is provided by fuse 11 via pin 15 to pin 49 on the hazard switch. You have replaced the turn signal switch so that is not your problem. Check fuse 11 and power on pin 15 on hazard switch to pin 49 on the flasher relay.

When I had this problem on my 1978 SC it turned out to be a slightly corroded fuse 11; brake lights also didn't work because of this fuse.

Thanks, I'll check this lead out. I did replace the flasher relay with new and no change as expected.

Found the issue. Bad wire from Fuse 11 to terminal 15 (GRN/RED wire) on the 4-Way Hazard switch.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Turn Signals Not Working

Had the same problem on my 74 911. Turned out to be the Emergency Flasher Button. Seems like the wire between the t'signals and 4 way flasher was poorly shown on the Flow Diagrams (all I had). But I replaced the 4 way Switch and all was well again.
good luck -

I wasn't going to say anything, but since you mention it. I was going to track the bad wire I found from fuse 11 back to the 4-way flasher to replace it and discovered the green/red wire that comes from the flasher does NOT go to Fuse 11 like it says on the schematic. It actually went to fuse 17. Which turns out DID have a broken fuse. I couldn't see it because it fell apart in my hand after I removed it.

Replacing the fuse fixed the issue.

Not sure why it was on that fuse and not on 11 like it was shown... previous owner or shop moved it for some reason?!? I don't know.
