Almost done--corner weights, ride height and alignment
After two weeks in the shop getting the Ledas mounted and the rest of the suspension refreshed, I'm getting the 911 back today. My mechanic doesn't have scales, so he took it down the road to Dougherty's for setup.
Here's the slip. I went with their recommendations for a fast street/some track alignment. Any comments on the settings? They seem to have nailed the corner weights--at least against the calculated ideal weight. I was pleasantly surprised at the overall weight of 2121 (without the driver). http://www.rallystuff.com/images/pcar_cornerweight.gif Can't wait to drive it tonight! :D |
Looks like it should be hoot to drive. Let us know how it works out!

Thom, when I entered my starting weights, your form came up with a different ideal than DAS did. Any idea why?

Well, I just picked it up and drove it back to the office. Seems pretty soft, I thought. Then I went over a crest kinda fast and got a definite wallow. :( When I got back I called my mechanic and he says, "Oh yeah, I never turned them up." So, I can attest that Ledas on full soft make the 911 feel like a Buick. ;)

Same negative camber front & rear, and toe-out in the front? I don't know... I always thought you want toe-in in the front for the track (or 0 pressed as the factory suggested way back).

Turned up the damping to 5/24 in front and 6/24 in back and it got much better. Still could use another click or two up front and probably 3 or 4 more in back once I get used to it. Have to experiment.
Great damping, though. After those awful KYBs in the back, anything would feel better, so I'm not very objective right now. :) Jury's still out on the toe. It was set at zero to start and it seems a bit too darty now. Problem is, the bump steer is pretty bad, since we wanted to wait for final ride height before shimming the rack. First, let me reduce the bump steer as much as possible, then I'll see if it's really too pointy. |
My understanding is that toe out makes a car very darty, but is good for track work. I have heard of some people who do recommend same camber front and rear while many others recommend .5 more in the rear, so I don't think the camber is out of line.
The only thing that I wonder about is the toe out in the front. Here in Houston I do lots of high speed straight freeway driving, so toe out would probably make that a bit of a chore, but in PA there may not be more than 100 yds of straight road in the state (NoVA is kinda like that), so it might not be a problem there. |
