Intermitent Surge

Did a road trip this past weekend through some of the mountains in AZ to Willcox. Noticed at constant throttle, the engine was "surging" sometimes more pronounced sometimes less. On the uphill with constant throttle it was more noticeable. Seemed to have power though it could have been down a bit. Stopped for lunch and refueled and on the run down AZ191 the surging was gone.

After checking into a hotel made my run to the track and the surging was back. Rest of the weekend were short 12 mile runs to the track with cold car. Who knew it would be 34 in Willcox? Could not tell whether the surging was there or gone.

On my interstate blast back to Phoenix metro running between 3400 and 3800 there was no surging. Car ran like a train, pulled well, great acceleration. Interestingly I got much better gas mileage as well. Running around 225mile with just under a 1/2 tank showing. My Friday run of 140 miles used more gas.

Thought of bad gas, but using good quality fuel, fuel filter is clean. Thoughts?

Motor is a bone stock 3.2 in a '69 chassis
