911 Engine Serial Number Decoding (Coupe Karmann)
Good evening,
I have a question for the experts. I got my hands on a 1970 911T and I want to check and see if the engine is possibly original. The Serial number is 9110123861 the engine number is 6109634, Also I can see on this chart that this is a (Coupe Karmann) Is that good or bad? I have no idea what does that mean If anyone can help out I appreciate it Thank You all |
Karmann or Porsche body really makes no difference. Porsche outsources bodies all the time from the 1950's through today; they just do not have the capacity to produce enough in house. From the earliest days Reutter was the primary body supplier until 1964 when Porsche purchased the body manufacturing portion of the company bringing it inhouse; the remainder became Recaro the seat manufacturer. Karmann was the next largest supplier, building 356, 911, 912 and all 914.
The engine # is consistent with a 911T, but I will have to go to my desktop computer to see how close it fits. I can also purchase data to write up a report to show original details. I have covered the engine question on the Early 911S Registry thread in detail. However, the engine is highly consistent with the VIN and is almost certain to be original to the car.
