Question Oil light question

To whom ever can help,
I have a couple of questions first of all is what does the red oil light that shares the hand brake indicator light on a 1970 911T S guages tell you exactly? Is it just for oil level or is it for preasure and temperature as well? My oil preasure reads as follows 20 to 25 psi at idle and 60 to 70 at about 3000 to 4000 rpms. My oil temp never rises above 180 degrees. I understand that oil level guages is next to worthless so I check my oil regularly ats its recommended procedure and I always have oil. My light has been coming on and its not the handbrake lever jumping up and down. I did notice that the other day rushing home a took a hard corner and the oil light went off for the rest of the way home and when I stop to idle and turned on the E brake and realease the E brake the oil light remained on again. I am not just quite confused, but quite concerned. My car is old and the motor needs rebuilding soon, but I would like to continue to drive this a bit longer before I tear down. Can you let me know whether it might be electrical or level sending unit on the fritz or worst something I am not mentioning. Help. First time the light came on was coming home from the Rgruppe rallye de Monterey.

I just got a respond from Bob and he suggested I have a faulty E brake indicator switch, but what else should I check after that. I am hoping thats all thats wrong, but I am bracing myself for more.

sincerely

If you have S gauges there is no oil pressure light. Only the T's and others without the S gauge option had the light. You a have a short somewhere behind the dash. I recommend the following.

1. Print out the electrical diagrams from the Pelican Main Page, on some kind of large-format color printer. I had mine printed in the biggest size kinkos has and had them laminated.

2. Disconnect the batteries. Make sure you don't let either positive terminal touch the body.

3. Using a butter knife or blunt screwdriver carefully pry out the oil gauge and look at the wires behind the gauge. They are often melted, fried, fused together or loose.

4. Using the wiring diagram, note the relationship between the colors on the wires going into the back of the gauge and the wires in the diagram. The illumination for the gauges is blue/black, the D+/61 for the alternator field is blue, the switched +12v is red and black. You should look at the wires that go to the brake light, hook up a multitester or continuity tester and actuate the hand brake. Then short the brake master cylinder switch to ground (a little harder to do).

5. Carefully put everything back behind the dash and drive on!

Good luck! And see this archived thread. '73 911s has no oil pressure idiot light
