Dansk 62 liter Fuel Tank

Our host sells this Dansk 62 liter fuel tank. Does anybody have any experience with this tank, specifically whether it has baffle(s) and if not, whether fuel starvation is a problem in normal driving with half full tank?
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Johan

Thank you. Good to hear. I presume that being a '76, you have the 85 liter tank, right?
How did you solve the fuel filter issue that you were having?
Johan

just ran it right to the pump and removed the inline filter from Len. zero issues and about 1500 miles.

Project Heavy Metal has a Dansk repop tank. No baffling, but then neither did the original. The pre-CIS cars were more tolerant of a little bit of starvation - carbs have a bit of reserve in the float bowls, and MFI has the filter console that acts as a de-aerator:

All about the fuel filter console:Project Heavy Metal - an all steel classic, remastered

In other words, that tank will be fine. And a 3.2 Carrera fuel pump is a simple, easy, cheap, and effective replacement for the NLAA (No Longer Available Affordably) early 3-nipple style fuel pump. One day I'm going to write a limerick about that......

LOL.... with your eloquence I'm sure that there are many of us fellow Pelicans that would enjoy reading your limerick......
Many thanks for clarifying the fuel starvation tolerances for both the MFI and carburetors.
I just this morning saw one of those NLAA pumps in the used parts sub-forum and gulped at the price and wondered to myself if I needed one for the 2.4S MFI based motor....I'm now much relieved that you clarified that I can go with the 3.2 fuel pump and filter instead. Would I need a separate fuel pressure regulator as well or is this already included in the MFI? As you have gathered already, I know next to nothing when it comes to the MFI....but I shall learn!!!
Cheers,
Johan

The MFI fuel filter console has a fuel pressure regulator built in - one of the hose fittings on the filter console is actually a pressure relief valve and is responsible for maintaining the 12 or so psi required to feed the MFI injection pump.

It's a little hard to understand the function of the MFI fuel filter console and the way the fuel flow sort of loops through the console twice before being returned to the tank by the pressure relief/regulator fitting. It does so in order to extract air from the fuel flow - any air bubbles float to the top of the filter canister and are essentially swept away by the return flow. The tricky bit inside the filter console is there is a sintered brass screen that creates a pressure differential between the two separate passages in the filter console. A small amount of fuel likely flows through the screen at all times, but air will pass through it freely. It's pretty clever and 100% effective. You can have as many bubbles as you can possibly imagine coming from the pump but nothing but pure de-aerated fuel is sent to the injection pump.

If you read the post I linked to and also a few before that there's a diagram of the MFI fuel supply system. The 3rd nipple on the pump ties into the fuel return to the tank and provides a bypass for the pump outlet should the pressure increase above some value. The modern style of pump has the relief built in so that part of the fuel schematic is simplified.

Fuel Console

You touched upon my next issue-the fuel console. I like your idea of going a bit more modern with a 3.2 fuel pump and filter but I would also need a fuel regulator and would prefer one with a pressure readout. Any thoughts anyone?

I'd say stick with the MFI fuel filter console, the 3.2 pump, and you don't need to get anything else - once you verify the fuel pressure at the MFI pump on the motor once, there's very little to go wrong, as long as you don't do like I did and add an inline filter that clogs and impedes fuel flow.

In other words, keep it simple

(EDIT)- The fuel supply (via the electric pump) is really not that critical and will not affect how the engine runs. Anything above zero actually works OK, but you'd want to shoot for 10 PSI at least. The factory pressure regulator on the MFI Fliter Console will probably give you 12-14.

Factory console:

#8 is the regulator (Porsche calls it an overflow valve):

The moral of the story is don't buy an incomplete fuel filter console if you can at all help it!
