If your ohmmeter indicated 2.5K (2500) ohms.

That only works when the engine is warm/hot. If the sensor is bad (open), the engine will always start when cold, but will make black smoke shortly after it starts.
If the sensor bad with very low resistance when cold, the engine will be difficult to start.
