suspension refreh component finishes
Front suspension is disassembled and some questions regarding refinishing and prep for reassembly. Most parts clean up remarkably well with citrus cleaner, scotchbite, and a little plastic or wire brush action. But my concern is the zinc plating and other factory finishes will be compromised by cleaning and making them look pretty for the short term and not "weathering" well for the long term. Control arms are going to Elephant for refresh/powder coating. Car is a fairweather driver that sees about 4-5K/year in Washington State and currently resides in Salt Lake for the refresh
Can the plated pieces just be cleaned and shined up like in the photo? The brake backing plate looks beautiful on one side but the backside is resisting all efforts to come clean. Should I find a plater and head down the slope? The raw aluminum pieces will get some kindof coating. Maybe the sharkskin type stuff used on aluminum boats. Any recommendation here? The struts will probably get some John Deere paint but I'm not convinced that's necessary. Original paint looks fair to good even where I heated up the wedge bolt. I'm not a concourse guy at all but would like to preserve factory finishes if that's possible and stands up to the elements Thanks to all who've documented this and provided input to us needy Pelicans. Very rewarding. Have I missed anything? Happy Holidays and a fun filled Porsche new year ![]() ![]() |

I sent a bunch of my plated parts out to Shaun at Tru6 to be re-plated and cerakoted. They turned out fantastic. I repainted my struts with JD Green, amazingly perfect match! I also powder coated a bunch of other underside bits. No it's not a perfect "factory" refresh, but I think it looks great and it will withstand the elements for the remainder of my life.
