Removing Viper alarm - and can someone identify this?
 

Pulling out the steering column today to replace the bearings on my '87 911 I find this absolute hack job of a Viper alarm install done many years ago. I don't use the alarm and I would like to remove it. Any tips? Any idea what the 2 relays are for? And what's up with the plastic box with the transparent cover?

I just get the snippers out and remove any non-stock wiring, relays and boxes, then you usually need to fix what the alarm was set up to delete, like starter function. Pretty easy really. Check the fat yellow wire from the ignition switch plug, which is usually cut and each side run to the alarm module. Just reconnect if you find that.

Save the relays and long lengths of wire, they're good for other things.

I have removed plenty of those systems from the 80s!! as John W mentioned, don't worry about what its function is, just take everything out that isn't OEM and you'll probably only have one wire to repair/splice back together,.

Agree... rip it all out, if your car starts, lights, radio etc... still working. Then you're good.

The clear plastic device looks like a shock detector, the one relay with the yellow wires is probably disabling the starter and the other relay might be used to flash the lights when you arm/disarm or when the alarm is tripped.

Thank you for the confidence boost. Alarm removal job is done. Was fairly simple and everything neatly put back together. Everything works. New steering column bearings done - not so simple. New steering wheel is sweet..

Good job. Yeah removing these (usually) very poorly installed 80's alarms is super satisfying. Easy to spot with all the non stock wires and hastily wrapped electrical tape rats nests of wires.

Yup, seems like every 911 owner spent top dollar on alarm systems in the 80’s & 90’s never realized how poorly installed most were. First thing I do is pull them out and repair any cut wires.

Alarms systems were like beepers back in the day... new tech, everyone wants em.

Handy tool is just download the appropriate manufacturers alarm manual and just reverse their installation procedures to uninstall it. https://www.viper.com/support/guides.aspx
