Euro 78sc vs us79sc
I have a 79SC. But a coworker has a ROW78SC that has been sitting for a couple of years. He wants to sell it to me but I am not sure what the difference is between the two.
Here is what he says about the car: The car is 1978, 911SC Targa. There is a list of things that need to be done to it to bring back to good running condition. They are - Needs new exhaust system, baffle heater system is shot, although actual muffle maybe still OK. Needs new heater / defrost blower motor. Needs speedometer cable. Starter is locked up, maybe can be rebuilt instead of buying new one. There is mildew on interior, needs cleaning. The head liner needs replacing. Interior is in Good shape other than that, no cracks in dash area. Minor rust on rear deck, bottom of headlights, and front corner posts. Paint has peeled on 8" circle in middle of front hood. The gasket around the driver and passenger window needs replacing. The past 2 years when it rains it leaks, thereby causing the mildew on the side of the seats. I have pulled the carpets off the floor board so that they would not get rotted and ruined. The engine is in very good shape, it ran very tight. However, if it were my car I would go ahead and pull it out, and recondition it at this point in time. The transmission is also in very good condition. It is a "grey" car, known in Porsche circles as a car originally sold in Germany. The guy I bought it from was in the Service, and had it sent here. I have all of the original Import Dock records, and DOT required upgrade certificates. I will try to post a picture to show the condition I guess the biggest point is price-what do you think is fair? |

A '78-'80 Euro has no big advantage over a '78-'79 US market car. It might be a little lighter (door beams were probably added when the car was imported, however, the bumper supports and fewer options usually make the Euro cars lighter), and it has the better looking rear bumper. However, the motors are both rated at 180 hp. I can't tell from the photo whether this is a good targa, but some of the problems you mentioned (especially rust and mildew) make me doubtful.

Unless there is some big problem with your car, why would you even consider this one? Sounds like a lot of potentially expensive problems to fix.

I'd be worried about the rust, and mildew. There is small differences;
The 78/79 US model has more torque 175@4200 vs ROW 165@4200, same HP(180). In 1980 the compression changes but the US model keeps same HP and torque whereas the ROW gets 8 more HP. If he wants to give it to you as a gift I would take it ![]()

As others have said, there really isn't much difference in the early Euro/USA SC's. The CIS components are interchangeable. The only reason I can think of for the difference in torque is cam timing. The cams were timed a little different.
I'm pretty sure it's not going to need a new speedometer cable. They've been electric since 1975. Rob 1980SC euro |

I have had 6 911's to date, one of which was a 79 euro sc that I got from the original owner. No sunroof, no a/c, no power windows, no power door locks and no faster than my U.S. 78 that I had earlier!

So what is it worth with the information given so far? $4 or 5 grand?

The only way to figure that out is to get an estimate to make the car right. Then subtract that from the fair market value for a similair US car in good condition in the area where you live. Hope that helps.

The reason I asked is basically $$$$. I have someone who is interested in my 79SC for about a grand more than i have in it. I can pick up this 78SC for about half of what I have in my current car. So, I am thinking of the 78SC plus the extra cash for "go fast goodies" and updated wheels.
