Did my first oil change

I took everybodys advice, bought a 5 gallon open topped container, the thing is huge and made for coolant changes. Had to make a trip to Buffalo so it let me put 150 miles on it, nice and warm. Took out the oil tank plug, WHAT THE F*&^ , it comes out like firehose, but the monster drain pan saved me. Next did the engine plug, cleaned the screen, put it all back together, and added 11 Qts per the manual written in German. Life is good, except now I need to pull out the monster container with 11 qts of hot oil, guess what, the container is as flimsy as a wet bag. The plastic used could not handle the heat so the thing is just sitting there getting softer and softer. So now what, I built a dam around it and hope that the thing holds together while it cools, locked the door and will go check it on Monday when I get back.

Moral of the story, h&ll I dont know, buy kitty litter in bulk??

Look for a metal pan?

It's too late now, but you could have used a garden hose and sprayed the container with water to help it cool it off.

News Bulletin,

You may have over filled the oil. Even though the manual says you hold 11 quarts that's total including the front cooler and oil lines. If you have a front mounted oil cooler you should never put in more than 9 quarts of oil when you make a change. Then run the car until it get's hot enough to open the thermostat, then check the oil level on the dipstick and add if needed. I may be wrong here but the front cooler and oil lines may not drain when you open the tank plug. If so you'll have about 2.5 quarts too much oil in the car and may suck it into the engine. I'm sure others will chime in and correct me if I'm wrong.

I added the nine quarts as recommended by the board but even after warm was still short. When I had added eleven it was showing on the stick. The manual I have said 11 qts at oil change, actually it was in liters as the car is a euro and the manual is in German. So I will drive it a bit longer as on a sixty degree day I cant get it hot enough to fully get the cooler flowing very much.

Thanx for your input

When I started reading your post I thought this is sounding good. I cracked up when I got to the end of it, Thank's

I don't change the oil on my Porsche any more, but I don't put a lot of miles on it, so to pay to have it done just makes sense to me.
I'm a Veteran though, have done lots, even on big diesels. Try 11 gallons coming at you, but even with that motor I just pay a service to come out now ( 150.00 with all the filters ) With that much used oil you have to keep it in 55 gallon drums and have a service pick it up.

Cheers and good luck when you open the door

Sounds almost like my story. Now you just need to pick up the big oil-filled container and have the flimsy poorly-fitting lid pop off, thereby dumping about 2 gallons of oil out onto the ground. What a joy.

I recently put in 11, and ended up taking almost 1 out to get the level between the dots when the engine is hot. Car seems happier too.

I use a Plastic tub that is used for mixing cement to drain the oil into. I found it at home depot. It is about 20x30 and at least 6 inches deep. Hold plenty of oil and is also a good tub for washing parts, its a very heavy plastic

Tomschoon, this post of yours made my monday LOL! :D :D :D

(I trust you know that most humor is based upon other people's misfortunes, please be forgiving!)

(You might know "schoon" means "clean" in Dutch, well, I hope your garage is "schoon"!).

I put too much oil during the my first oil chang. I used the oil cap. in the manual. It smoked so much that I thought I broke something. After draing 2-3 qtr, all is well.
