Rear speaker enclosure

Stereo question, my 77 has this unusual rear speaker enclosure and I was wondering if it’s a factory/dealer option, or just an aftermarket enclosure? The speakers are shot and I plan to replace them, not sure if I should keep this enclosure or just use the deck underneath and mount the rear speakers horizontally.
Thanks!

aftermarket - very popular mid 70's- mid 80's.

Could have been dealer installed as the dealers in those years had more freedom to sell/ install any items a customer wanted. I have the exact unit in my 75 - I think it's a cool look.

The speakers you have installed are definately aftermarket and proably not the ones originally installed - mine have more size appropriate blaupunkt speakers.

Moch 1 - still available: Speakers for your Porsche 911 or 912

I like mine - plus it saves me having to replace/fix the rear parcel shelf...

Thanks spuggy. That site only claims a fit through 78. Has anyone tried this in an 80 Targa or know of an alternative?

Call/email and ask? I don't think much changed...

He does list a crossover/woofer system for later cars New 8" woofers for your 911 or 912 !!

He doesn't seem to list that for Targa - but the pictures do show an install in one, so....

I took the flat padded shelf insert (about 3 inch thick) and opened it up, put in MDF enclosers for the new speakers, re-wired with bullet connectors and re covered in black leather. Less intrusive then the vertical speaker mounts but to be honest, i like those mounts. Here is a picture of standard after market insert from the 70's and still available "new" on web (expensive)

I have bought a set like these from California and intend to redo them with modern speakers if possible...but they are still in CA until i travel there for business and pick them up

My car is in shop and i will send you photo of the flat setup if you wish when i get car back

To be honest, i like your setup..i would look at how the speakers are mounted and alter to frame with mdf to improve sound if possible

If the frame isn't rigid, I'd think a mod would improve the sound quality. I don't recall mine being in a sealed enclosure. If not, and the framework appears sturdy, I wouldn't worry about it. Good speakers do make a difference whether in a sealed enclosure or in free air. Besides, most of the sound reproduction should come from the front, not behind you.

tur dat..but i can say that doing my rears did improve the sounds of Santana! The MDF idea was based on watching so many of these car shows on TV and how they always enclose the speakers..i have no idea if that made a difference but it does give a much stronger mount for the speaker

TV show cars don't care how many Dynamat layers and MDF covers their interior - could be a hundred pounds or more with serious audio hardware, cables, speakers and environmental insulation.

Folks on the internet say Dynamat is .66lbs/sq ft. Others say about 70 lbs cover the interior, but that depends on your level of OCD.

true, but i am not talking about 10s of pounds here, it was probably less then 1 lb to create enclosures and give the speaker a solid base. If you can figure a way to mount a speaker in soft foram covered in leather..then my hats off to you :-)

Pretty sure there's a solid structure under the existing vinyl and foam layers to give it its shape, especially where the speakers mount. Remove one of the existing speakers and take a look. Here's a hint of what's underneath.

Speakers for your Porsche 911 or 912

I m not referring to the Modal unit with vertical mounts.., my original was just a flat rear shelf pad about 2.5 in thick, 1/8 th inch fibreboard base + shaped Styrofoam and cover. I guess pictures would help but i didnt take any during that project which is rare. If all goes well, you may see it posted on the for sale section later this spring :-)

When i pick up the new (old) unit from San Diego I will be keen to see how it is structured for rigidity and like you, i anticipate it will be sufficient as is to take new speakers and the 60w my amp puts out.

ps: 4 speakers for old blues like King Biscuit Boy is really da bomb

I believe Clover is/was the brand name. They also had a unit that filled the space under the IP.

This is a nice piece for big speakers if you can still find one (not many out there):
