How do I determine if it’s real or not? Spoiler…
Hi there.
I am fairly new to the nuances of 911 ownership. I have a 77 911S with the 930 treatment. It’s a work in progress…. I’m switching from the large spoiler to a ducktail and would like to pass along the spoiler I have on there to someone looking for that style. To my untrained eye it looks to be a real one, based on the Porsche embossing and the condition of the rubber… but also the wife body flares are steel and the front fenders are real 930 fenders… so I think it was “done right”…. but how can i tell in order to price it properly? The variance seems to be wildly large…$500-1500+ in some cases it seems. The Porsche crest on the rubber lip is a good indication that you have a “real” one.

I would keep it if i were you , that's if you have the space ...
The rear spoiler is part of the M491 total look , a ducktail might be appealing to you but should you ever decide to sell the car it would fetch more money with the real 'look" spoiler. Just sayin ... |

This car was a bit of a basket case when I got it. Engine in boxes, questionable wiring on the stereo/window switches, SEVERAL layers of paint, hadn’t been driven for at least 8 years… It is a dream car of sorts for me that came to be rather serendipitously, so I’ll likely keep it and pick away at it for a long time… probably into the time when combustion engines are outlawed ;). I agree that the real spoiler would be desirable to someone else, but that’s long in the future and as the car is not original (now has a 3.0) and was electronically modified (aftermarket cruise control etc)… I’d rather let someone else use it and put the proceeds towards getting this car more sorted. Should I decide selling is the way to go and the market dictates a matching tail is more desirable, I’ll source another tail. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

The rubber appears original based on the Porsche Crest and that is where the money is. The piece mounted to the rubber I do not think has any real value or significance either? The deck lids on this style as I recall were stock declids just cut to modify. There is also some value if you have the baffles that attach to the deck lid? The earlier 74-77 whale tails had serial numbers in the frame and have significant value as does the rubber.

Good condition original tail with decklid $800-$1000 seems to be the price range.
I also agree don’t sell it and you’ll be disappointed with wide body and ducktail once you see it. |
The beauty of the naturally aspirated widebody is the ability to run any decklid configuration.

Part number inside the spoiler. And as already pointed out, the crest molded into the rubber 8s a good indicator of at least factory rubber

What inch wheels are those? If 15s then it will look way better with 16s. Or much higher profile tyres. Those massive gaps, particularly around the front wheels look pretty bad to my eye.
If the wheels and tyres are too small and you compensate by lowering it, it may look great but you will have problems on uneven roads. Sent from my SM-G988B using Tapatalk |

1: you are all spot on. The suspension needs to be addressed. It was left this way for storage and transport when it was put under the knife three owners ago circa 2012. All they did was remove the engine into boxes and rip out the carpet I think ;) 2: the wheels are gotti 3piece 16x11 and 16x9.5. The tires are not correct on the fronts which make them look off…paired with the massive gap. Step one was moving it under its own power. Check. Although it came by way of a fully rebuilt 3.0, rebuilt 915 trans, new clutch, new brakes all around, new fuel tank, new oil tanks, etc etc etc…. This winter is sound deadening, carpet, suspension which can all be done in my garage. Given the scope of what I’ve already done, salvaging some extra cash from the whaletail even if for the short term is a better play. Thanks for all the input! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It’s all completely subjective of course. I’m ok with ducks on F body’s.
Jacks Black beauty and the 2.8 RSR are both great examples. Those are F-body’s though. Period correct and appropriate. Not so much on a G-body. Soooo overdone. Again, my opinion only. No disrespect to the 1000s of G-bodied duck lovers:D |
