82' 911 SC Remove oil cooler engine in car??

Hi I was looking at this article about removing the oil cooler, one on the engine, with the engine in the car.. Has anybody done this?? My 82' SC has a separate grey shroud piece over the cooler but there is a bolt way under the air box. Removing the Air-Box and all the injection stuff is a real &^%$!!!!

Any quick way to get the cooler out???

I have a real bad oil leak and need to replace the seals...

I’m curious as well about this. Mine is an ‘84, I should recall if I have a removable end cap but I don’t remember (of course lol) despite 2 engine rebuilds

I have done it on a 3.2 removed sheet metal and partial drop. There is a service bulletin on case thin spot jb weld fix behind oil cooler. I unbolted AC compressor and moved it. Not sure about CIS motor. Took an afternoon.

i did this on the road from LA to NY in winter back in 1992 in Texas..my cooler blow up.Long story.
You really have to partial drop the engine, drain the oil ,disconnect the main oil line from oil pump line to the oil thermostat, disconnect el.cables on top and fuel lines....and breather hoses next to the oil filter...

Yes partial drop. Disconnected fuel line from filter, breather hoses, removed air box, disconnect shift linkage. Lowered it about 7 inches slowly. Removed the right and back right tin and the part that directs the air to the cooler (kinda hard to get to those screws under the intake.

Mine is a 82' 3.0 SC. If I remove the Air Box, which is what I'm trying to avoid(done it before) That would expose the last screw I trying to remove that holds the shroud over the cooler. Seems like there would be no need to do a partial drop at that point..

The cooler shroud can be lifted enough to get a socket and extension in there without removing the last hold down bolt, or two, that are hard to get at.

Yes that worked, I got the cooler out without dropping the engine, or removing the exhaust..
But here is the results.. The seals did not looked damaged, but, as you would expect, they sit about 1.5mm lower than a new one.. I would expect this being compressed and heat/cool cycles for a long time.. Do you think this is the source of my leak??

I'm about to do this as well on my 86.

I'm doing the RSR rocker seals, Turbokraft rocker locks and installing a snapgap set along with a bunch of other do dad's.

We've already removed everything from the top of the motor (fuel injection, fan shroud, etc ) and now we're getting to the bottom stuff.

I plan on doing a partial drop as well for a little more room.

This should be "Real fun"

This should be easy with all the fuel injection stuff out of the way.. I decided to do a partial engine drop because while I'm in there I decided to fix all the possible leak areas: Replace the large rubber tube from oil fill area, crankcase breather tower gasket, thermostat O-ring, and teflon on oil pressure warning lamp switch.
Good writeup on oil leaks:

Let me know how it was doing the Rocker Seals, looks like a slow job..

The seals may be the cause of your leak. The new green seals you show are good quality.

The writeup you mentioned (link partially censored probably because it is a competitor for our host) contains a picture named porsche-911-oil-leaks-16.jpg when you scroll further down.

Check it out, it shows where the leak may also come from and how to easily fix it while you are there.
This was the cause of my leak and I used JB-Weld for it. There is a Porsche Service Bulletin for this somewhere.
Ivan will chime in may be.

Just finished the crankcase breather tower gasket, that was a pain with the airbox and all the fuel stuff still left in, but I got it.. Moved to the Thermostat O-Ring, and that may be my leak, it was all dried up and brittle.. Wondering if I can find the size and just get one local.. or I will order from PP..
