88 911 Coupe rear glass and brake light
I have a 1988 911 Coupe with a bad rear glass seal.
The tech who would replace the seal noticed corrosion on the defrost wires in the glass, some have cracked and no longer work. I was told that I should get a replacement glass panel. I ordered the new rear glass but it does not come with provisions to mount the third brake light. I have the new seal and trim pieces. My car has the brake light at the top of the rear glass. I have seen little information online about replacing the third brake light with a thin horizontal one at the top center of the glass. Would someone here know what is involved? How to wire it? mount it? who makes/sells the thin brake light? The new glass has arrived at the dealership and would like to address this issue soon. Thank you for any help you can provide. Raul |

I’d just reinstall without the 3rd brake light as it obstructs the rear view anyways. I did this on my 1990.

These cars all need a hi-mount 3rd brake lights in my opinion. Way too many distracted drivers on the roads nowadays. Anything we can do to catch their attention helps. I have a 3rd brake light flasher unit installed that flashes the 3rd brake light 3 times when I step on the brakes.

The rear glass issue is not resolved. (1988 Carrera coupe)
The defrost wires were corroded. Some worked some did not. Got a new Porsche seal 91154522500 and new rear glass. I am having a hard time finding a shop that can replace the glass and seal. I contacted several glass shops. One claimed to have over 20 years of experience including Porsches. They managed to remove the old glass but did not know how to work with the defrost wiring. They put the glass back, not connected to the wiring. The old seal is in worse shape now. The old glass seal has openings for the wiring to be routed through. The new Porsche seal does not. The wiring harness extends trough the body at the lower driver's side corner and they could not figure out where to disconnect it. Questions: 1. Do I have to cut new holes in the new seal to install the wires? 2. Where does the harness end? so that I can disconnect it. I understand the seal, trim and the wiring should be attached to the glass on a bench off of the car. 3. How does the rear speaker panel get removed? The existing harness has 4 or 5 wires that go through the old seal individually through 4 or 5 tiny holes. I have looked for videos and only found installations without defrost wiring. Your help will be much appreciated. Thank you - Raul |
