Grey (Weatherproofing?) Tape Under Window Trim

I'm prepping my '84 3.2L Cabriolet for paint, and came across this grey tape under the window trim piece at the top of the door. I'm assuming that it's some sort of weatherproofing. After painting, I would like to replace it but not sure what to use. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The gray tape is factory applied and was put there to prevent the trim piece that snaps over it from rubbing through the paint and to also prevent possible noise due to vibration.

Do not replace it with masking or electrical tape. I use the blue 3M plastic tape.

Thanks for the response!! I’ll check out the 3M tape.

Would this be the 3M tape product: 3M Vinyl Tape 471+ - $12 on Amaz*n

Google search for "3M blue plastic tape" brings up a lot of ads that are not necessarily relevant...

I’ve used butyl tape around the holes where the pins attach (same stuff you use under the rear quarter window trim). you can get duct seal from home depot that should be the same/similar stuff.
