Starter removal

Well, I'm attempting my first engine drop. Thanks to Pelican for the nice, clear, "How-To" article. Without it, I probably wouldn't even try it. Anyway, not too much going bad so far; paper towels got soaked too fast in the oil line fittings and couldn't find any toy balloons in the house, so I had to resort to, uhm, well, yeah, those are condoms on there. Anyway, I quit for the evening at the starter. Is that an allen-head bolt on the bottom of the starter and what size is it?!? My 10mm keeps popping out before it grabs ... course, it could be because it's round for easy insertion (no condom comments, please). Is it a 10mm allen head? (and what of the one on top I can't even see?!?) Oh, yeah, it's a '74 Carrera (or S, and yes, I think the only differences between the two US models were appearance - flares - and tires available).

it is a 10mm. if you are leaving the trans in the car, the top allen nut can be attacked from the top, after the engine is lowered a bit.

Are you attempting to only lower the engine. Or are you going to remove the transmission as well. If you are going to take both out, there is no need to remove the starter, just mark and remove the electrical connections. If you aren't going to remove both, I found that it was easier to get to the top allen bolt by reaching my arm over top of transmission.

Good luck!

Starter Removal

No, the motor's coming out. I have a semi-complete Euro 3.0 to put in. The 2.7 is exhbiting all the text-book symptoms of pulling head studs.

Dan T: THANKS! This is exactly what I needed to read! (I MUST improve my Search abilities).

To the others, also thanks. What the hell did we do before the Internet???

Gratefully,

Ducktail
