Hole in oil thermostat

I was changing the oil lines to the thermostat on my 82SC and noticed a hole inside the line coming in from the oil reservoir. Is this do to wear? I assume this is not normal.

Joe,

The hole in that cavity should look more like a circular or roundish opening. Find a new auxiliary thermostat and compare it. I have two (2) boxes of auxiliary oil thermostats and every one of them has circular holes.

Some of the auxiliary oil thermostats that I used for my experiments:

Look very closely inside the cavities and you will see the circular holes.

The bore seams smooth and temperature gauge always reads normal.
Should I change it?
Thanks for the help.

Joe,

The opening or passage holes in your auxiliary thermostat that we are discussing might look ugly but they don’t have any significant effect to its OPERATION. There is no slide valve or moving parts involve in this section of the auxiliary thermostat housing. Only flowing oil from engine going IN and oil going OUT back to the oil tank.

Perform an oil/water bath test to determine the operating temperature range of the thermostat. Generally, it would start to OPEN/CLOSE @185°F and fully OPENED/CLOSED @200°F.

Do not be distracted by the OPEN/CLOSE terminology I used. This was simply like a glass of water half filled or half emptied.
