Post Updating the Rennline Phone Mount to MagSafe for iPhone 12/13

I wanted to pass on some info that might be helpful. I have the Rennline ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount (available here on our host site) in my 911, and with the newer iPhone 12 and 13 having MagSafe – a more secure built-in magnet – I wanted to upgrade the magnetic pad, and not have to stick a magnetic plate onto my phone like in the past.

This has been out for a year and Rennline still hasn't offered anything compatible, which is a shame, but there are bunch on Amazon, and it turns out that the ball-and-socket connection between the pad and the bracket seems to be fairly universal.

I bought this one for $19:
Magnetic Car Mount Holder - Magnet Air Vent Phone Mount Compatible with-MagSafe Case/iPhone 13 12 Pro Max Mini, 360° Adjustable Cell Phone Car Holder Mount for iPhone 13&12 Series

I removed the clip attachment and stuck it to the Rennline bracket. It's just right. I like that it's black, since a lot of them seem to be white, so it isn't so much of an eyesore in the interior (though it is bigger than the old magnetic pad). I didn't want one with charging because I don't want a cord running across my dash 100% of the time. So I'm not getting the full benefit of MagSafe, but that's fine with me.

Standard Rennline ExactFit Magnetic Phone Mount:

$19 MagSafe pad installed to Rennline Phone Mount bracket

If this is a duplicate thread I can delete, but I couldn't find anything about this when I was searching.

Does the entire vent clip/holder work on the center dash vents of the 911? I've always thought the Rennline mount was a little too close to the gear shift lever.

the Rennline mount rotates on the clock's bezel, while it's close to the shifter in its current/pictured 5:30 position, moving it up to 1 o'clock would make the phone sit a lot farther from the shifter. On my '86, with the newer vent mounts, a vent clip wouldn't work, as the iPhone would angle down at 45 degrees due to the vents' orientation. Not sure if you'd have the same issue with an SC, but LOVE my Rennline mount

Just as a frame of reference I have the Rennline MagSafe charge mount for 911 and an iPhone 13. I find the Rennline magnet to be a bit too weak. It holds the phone just fine while driving but even the slightest brushing of your hand against the phone’s surface anywhere but in the center will cause the phone to flop off the mount and fall to the floor. If the magnet were 10%-20% stronger, it would be perfect.

Heh, I did this for the cupholder mount in my daily driver...Most of these balls are the same side, so you can mix and match heads and bases to use a MagSafe connector with just about any mount!

I also have the Rennline MagSafe mount, and I, too, find the magnet to be a little weak.

I've got an iPhone 11, so I'm using the metal ring that came with the mount. Previously I used the magnetic mount without the MagSafe charging, and the metal plate they included basically blocked all wireless charging functionality. The little metal ring they give ya now allows wireless charging to work on my charging pad at home, but it does heat up the ring quite a bit - It becomes uncomfortable to hold when you pick it up after charging for an hour or so.

I imagine it won't matter when I finally upgrade the phone (hopefully this year), but maybe this info is useful to someone out there who, like me, has a bit of an older phone. (Or just wants a phone mount that doesn't kill wireless charging functionality!)

I have Iphone 12 and just used the Magnet Air Vent Phone Mount on my center vent and works fine (77 Targa). I found that despite a new gauge rubber seal, the rennline easily pulled the gauge away from the dash and in order to mount..the mount had to be at 5 oclock in order to clear the edge of the dash.

To solve the issue with the clock gauge coming out, I applied 2-3 wraps of electrical tape under the gauge seal, worked great!
